Best Film
Kaho Na Pyar Hai

BEST ACTOR: Hrithik Roshan
THIS award’s special, coming as it does for my very first film, Kaho Na Pyaar Hai. It feels specially good because I’ve won it before my peers in filmdom. But I don’t think it puts the performances of any of the leading actors to the shade. I’ve grown up watching them perform and with every fibre of my being I’ve always wished I could perform their roles just as well. So I owe this award to them. And to my family, who’ve given me their unconditional support. And to my wife Suzanne, for believing in me... As Dad says, filmmaking is teamwork, and he’s right. I couldn’t have won it but for the entire Kaho Na Pyaar Hai unit. Especially my co-star Amisha Patel.

BEST ACTRESS: Tabu
MY thanks to the eminent Screen-Videocon Jury on this award. It’s my first Screen award and it will always be special to me. I wish Mahesh (Manjrekar, director, Astitva) were here to share in my joy. He gave me one of the best roles I’ve ever played, an almost tailor-made one. Here’s hoping more such roles come my way! I wish to thank my family for their support, especially my Mom, who let me wear all her best cotton sarees for the shoots. On behalf of the Astitva unit, I also wish to thank everyoneho’s been supportive of the film, especially the scores of women who walked up to tell us they appreciated our effort.

BEST DIRECTOR & BEST FILM: Rakesh Roshan,
Kaho Na... Pyaar Hai

WHAT more can I have asked for as producer, director, brother (Rajesh Roshan was adjudged best music director) and father (son Hrithik was voted best promising newcomer and best actor) that we’ve all won awards today. It’s a great moment for me, the likes of which may never come again.

BEST PROMISING NEWCOMER: Hrithik Roshan
THIS award’s special, but receiving it from Shah Rukh Khan’s even more so. It’s an honour I can never forget. I owe this award to Kishore Namit Kapoor and his academy, who’ve helped groom me into the actor I am. I also owe it to my family, especially my parents. How can I ever thank them enough for everything they’ve been to me over the years. So Mom and Dad, this one’s for you...

BEST PROMISING NEWCOMER: Shilpa Navalkar
I’M not just happy for myself that this award’s come my way. Now that I’ve won it, it feels good, because it’s after all also a recognition for serious cinema. It only goes to show there is an audience for films like Kairee, even if they do not turn out to be commercially successful. I only hope it serves as a big boost to those who’re engaged in the making of meaningful, socially-relevant films.

BEST ART DIRECTOR: Nitin Desai
I am really thrilled at winning this years award too and thankful to the Screen Award jury for the same. I missed my father this time when I was on the stage as he was a witness to the award ceremony last year.

BEST PERFORMANCE IN SUPPORTING ROLE: Sonali Bendre
I’M thrilled to bits on winning this trophy, of course. But I don’t think it would be fair on my part to take all the credit for it. I owe this award most of all to director Satish Kaushik. When I first heard the script of Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai, I was reluctant to take it up because I wasn’t sure I could do justice to it. But it was he who convinced me I was just the person for it. Boy, am I now glad I took him at his word!...

BEST PERFORMANCE IN NEGATIVE ROLE: Rajpal Yadav
I’M too excited for words, and I’m still trying to let it all sink in. What shall I say? I seem to have forgotten all my lines. My special thanks to Guruji Dev Prabhakarji Shastri who’s been the greatest inspiration in my life. If recognition of this sort’s come to a Lucknow-born nobody like me, it only shows there’s justice on earth as well. How do I feel about it? Well, history tell us Gautam Buddha got moksh in a jungle. Having won the award for my role in Jungle, it seems as if mujhe bhi Jungle mein moksh mila hai.

BEST PERFORMANCE IN COMIC ROLE: Paresh Rawal
I owe this award to the entire unit of Hera Pheri, especially director Paresh Rawal and Feroz Nadiadwala for the great role I was given, and dialogue writer Neeraj Vora for the memorable lines I got to deliver in it. I also wish to thank Sunil Shetty and Akshay Kumar for being such fabulous team men...

BEST LYRICIST: Anand Bakshi
I am grateful to God for this award. Aaj bada anand ka din hai mere liye. It will inspire me to write better stuff in future.

Marathi Films

BEST FILM: Mrugjal, Producer: Naveen Upadhyay
IT feels great to have won such a prestigious award. I wish to thank all my unit members for making it possible, director Satish Rajwade, the technicians and actors. And especially Blaze Music, who have been of great support. They made this dream come true.

BEST DIRECTOR: Mahesh Kothare/Khatarnak

I am very happy to receive the award. Six years ago, I was the first recipient of the Screen trophy, when I won it for my film Majha Chakula. So it feels good to have won it again.
I wish to thank my producer Vidya Bachewar for giving me this film. The banner pumped in good money and we were able to make it a commercial success.

BEST ACTOR: Tushar Dalvi/Mrugjal
I am too thrilled for words, and just don’t know what to say. This is my first major award. This movie was very different, not the usual commercial feature film kind. I played a psychoanalyst, an individual by himself and a father. So it was a very complex role. That’s why the award is so satisfying. After all the efforts we put into the film, it’s nice to be acknowledged for it.

BEST ACTRESS: Mrinal Kulkarni/Jodidaar
I feel very excited, and that, I promise you, is an understatement. I played a double role in the film, if you remember, and both characters were diametrically opposite each other. I am very thankful to the entire team and the director for helping me win the award.
