The Indian Express Group initiated the Screen Awards in 1994. Since then the awards have become one of the most reputed awards in the country and the criteria for winning is based on professional excellence in the field rather than ‘popularity’. Hence, these awards are considered as one the toughest awards and most coveted in the country.
The Screen Awards is the only Award function, which has been graced by the presence of the Executive Director and the Governor of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (known as the Oscars). The Screen Awards are very different from the rest of the awards held in the country, as the jury comprises of distinguished professionals from the industry itself, in a manner similar to the Oscars.
The award statuette was first unveiled at the 1st Screen Awards ceremony at the Helipad in Mumbai’s Film City. It was the first time that Sunil Gavaskar was persuaded to attend a film function.
14 Award functions have been held so far since its initiation in 1994 and it has become one of the most popular events held in Bollywood.
January each year Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam and Kannada films are awarded in a glittering ceremony where popular stars from the industry perform.
Over the years the awards have only gotten bigger and become one the most anticipated awards by the actors as well as the audience.
Here’s looking forward to another exciting star-studded event in a few days.
