Melody in the movies

Kalyanji-Anandji’s Sultanat song ‘Jaanoo jaanam jaaneman...’ has Anjaan spin a complete first line of variations of the term ‘beloved’. MIDBANNER

Bappi Lahiri’s Ilzaam has tepidly popular songs like ‘Main aaya tere liye...’ (Nazia with brother Zohaib Hasan in the latter’s film debut), Asha-Shabbir’s ‘Duniya ki aisi taisi...’ and Amit Kumar’s ‘I am a street dancer..’. His Balwaan is noted only for Kishore Kumar’s duet with Nazia, ‘Rock-n-roll.’ Asha-Mohd.Aziz’s ‘Pyar hamara amar rahega...’ from Muddat is popular too.

Govinda’s brother Kirti Kumar makes his debut as singer with‘Karna padega tumhari aqal ko..’ along with Kanchan under Babla’s baton in the film Duty, the first of the few songs he will sing for his younger brother.

From Anu Malik’s repertoire, only a couple of songs from Ek Chaddar Maili Si register— Mohd. Aziz’s ‘Maa o maa Sheraawaaliye...’ and Asha-Shabbir’s ‘Log to mandir masjid jaaye...’.

In Allah-Rakha presented by Manmohan Desai, Prayag Raaj writes the gimmicky ‘Na Amar na Akbar na main Anthony...’ but it doesn’t catch on.

Iqbal Qureshi’s last film Sautela Pati is released. So is Shiv-Ganga, Chitragupta’s last film with Biswajeet for whom he composed hit scores in Vaasna, Pyar Ka Sapna and Pardesi. Suresh Wadkar playbacks for the veteran hero.

Naushad’s last release from his peak phase, the inordinately-delayed Love And God, finally hits the screen. ‘Rahega jahaan mein tera naam...’ sung by Mohammad Rafi, Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar, Talat Mehmood and Balbir is Talat’s last-released film song. It also is the last film with the legendary combination of Naushad and Rafi.

RD Burman has his career’s worst year. From Saveray Waali Gaadi the beautiful Lata number ‘Din pyar ke aayenge...’ goes unsung.

The stage is set for one more dull year in film music.
