Ahushed silence descended on the 4000-strong guests at the launch of Marudanaayagam at Film City, Chennai, when the announcement came that a trailer of the film was to be screened. Soon, visuals started appearing on the jumbo screen, images of horses running and soldiers poised for the attack as cannons boomed.

He is South India’s answer to Mumbai’s Nana Patekar and Hollywood’s Al Pacino. The conviction and intensity with which he projects anguish and agony on screen has bowled over both critics and fans alike. And they don’t know where to place him — in the ‘arty’ category or among ‘mass actors’. Raghuvaran, who began as a hero, soon realised that being a hero was limiting. Now he plays all kinds of people, from second hero to psychopath and villain to character roles, provided the role is challenging. Excerpts from an interview:
