Press walks out on Daler Mehndi
The King of Bhangra Pop was given his just
desserts for his high-handed behaviour by the Press, when they walked out
of a conference organised by him to talk about his future
plans.
The press meet dated November 12, held at the newly
inaugurated Hotel Regent in Mumbai, was meant to start at 12.30 p.m. to give
details about a concert of Daler Mehndis on November 13, in Mumbai,
and to highlight Mehndis work on conserving the environment. Members
of the fourth estate waited patiently for Mehndi to arrive, but there seemed
to be no sign of him, or the others who were to speak on the occasion, even
one hour later than the scheduled time, at 1. 30 p.m. The PR agency handling
the conference kept requesting the Press to wait for a few minutes, promising
that Mehndi would be coming any minute. But when it was nearly 2.00 p.m.
and there seemed to be no signs of the singer, the journalists decided to
walk out, since there was no plausible explanation for the delay. After all,
Mehndi was staying in the same hotel with his entourage (the hotel was one
of the sponsors of the concert and was playing host to him) some floors above,
and all he had to do was take the elevator down. It was more than obvious
that Mehndi was acting difficult, and taking the Press for granted. Well,
he better not forget that the Press gave him all the boost he needed when
he was starting out as a new singer. And going by the innumerable examples
around, he should also know that the career of a pop singer is short-lived.
So if he is here today, hes gone tomorrow.
