Influence of classical music on the decline

The influence of fast-paced western music has weaned away youngsters from the good old classical compositions, that were a rage in the ’60s and ’70s, according to santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma.

“In the earlier years, compositions were based on classical music. The present day film music is different from the golden oldies, but still people listen to the old songs because they have a classical touch,” Sharma remarked after releasing Together, an album he has done jointly with his son Rahul.

On the student-teacher relationship in classical music, Sharma said the guru should always understand what the student is capable of and act accordingly.

Sharma, who has composed music for several films, said “I am my own critic also. People may say you have played really well, but I have to satisfy myself.”
