Hindi cinema has proudly claimed that it is secular and has done more for national unity than any other agency. How a film conveys this message of unity and religious tolerance — through subtle persuasion or an aggressively self-conscious messianic zeal— depends on the filmmaker’s ability and intention. Parto Ghosh believes in bludgeoning his audience with his message. The publicity brochure of Ghulam-E-Musthafa announces very clearly that “the story is told in the popular genre”.
