Analysis
Titanic fell below the $25 million mark once again but remained at the top
position, collecting a more than respectable $21.5 million. The films
US domestic box-office total has crossed the $400 million mark and is now
heading steadily towards the $461 million US gross of Star Wars, which will
probably be overtaken in a couple of weeks before the 70th annual Academy
Awards, to be held on March 23.
The Wedding
Singer also continued to sing at the second position, doing very well with
the date crowd in the post-Valentine period. The third position also remained
unchanged, with Barry Levinsons Sphere losing a lot of momentum in
terms of attendance. The film dropped by almost 50 per cent in its second
week, largely due to poor word of mouth, collecting over $7 million. The
strong opening was thanks to writer Michael Crichtons equity, on whose
novel the film is based, and a stellar cast that includes Sharon Stone, Dustin
Hoffman and Samuel L. Jackson.
The films
nominated for this years Oscars also continued to do well, with Gus
Van Sants Good Will Hunting remaining at the fourth position with a
$7 million collection over the weekend. Miramaxs award campaign for
the film seems to have worked and the film has earned a winning position
of a very high calibre film. L.A. Confidential also remained in the Top Ten
at the tenth position with over $2 million dollars over the weekend.
Miramaxs
Senseless and Sonys Palmetto were the only two openers in the Top Ten,
taking up the sixth and the eighth positions respectively. John Landis
Blues Brothers 2000 and Chow Yun Fats The Replacement Killers were
pushed out completely from the Top Ten, while Robert Duvalls The Apostle
took up the ninth position with a $2.5 million gross.
