Eminem
replaces Britney on album charts
Grammy-winning rapper Eminem grabbed pole position on the U.S. pop album
charts as his second release The Marshall Mathers LP sold 1.76 million
copies in its first week.
While his toppling of reigning champ Britney Spears was no surprise, the
sales figures were at the higher end of industry expectations which had
centered around the 1.5 million range. Spears Oops! ... I Did It
Again (Jive) ruled last weeks charts with sales of 1.32 million
units in its opening stanza.
Eminem now ranks No. 2 behind N Sync in terms of first week numbers.
The boy bands current album No Strings Attached kicked off with
2.42 million units in March. The rapper, whose new album bears his real
name in the title, won two Grammys in February for his debut release The
Slim Shady LP. It debuted at No. 2 in February 1999 with 283,000 units
and has sold about 3.4 million to date. It ranked at No. 25 on last weeks
chart.
