Santana Album Gets Grammy Boost to No. 1 Propelled by its 11 Grammy nominations, Santanas comeback album, Supernatural, returned to the No. 1 spot on the U.S. pop charts after a nine-week absence. With overall sales in the January 9 week sliding 35 per cent in the post-Christmas doldrums, Supernatural was one of the few to show an increase over the previous week. The albums sales rose 14 per cent to about 204,000 units, taking its 30-week haul to 4.9 million. It ranked topped the charts for three weeks last October. According to predictions the album could end up selling about 10 million copies in the United States, and 15-20 million worldwide. Internationally, Canada, Germany, Mexico and Australia are the biggest markets. Santana and its frontman, Carlos Santana, received 10 nominations, including Album and Record of the Year, while the song-writers of the bands hit single Smooth (Rob Thomas and Itaal Shur) were nominated in the Song of the Year category. In a statement, Arista (the company which has released the album) president Clive Davis called Santanas sales figures "great -- not only for Arista, but for everyone who is in the music industry as well." Santanas former label, Sony Music, reported that a Santana greatest hits set returned to the charts at No. 153 with sales of 9,500 units.
