Presenting the most exciting celluloid happenings of 2008. Enjoy!
JANUARY Halla Bol Rajkumar Santoshi gets into hard-hitting social mode again with this story of an ordinary small-town guy who zooms to the top as a superstar and then starts falling as a human being. Ajay Devgan, Vidya Balan and Pankaj Kapur star in this film. My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves A Red Chillies Entertainment (Shah Rukh Khan’s banner) presentation, the film is about Anthony, a bartender wanting to go places in the film industry and his run-in with the underworld. Introducing Nikhil Dwivedi opposite the dependable Amrita Rao, this E.Niwas film has Mithun Chakraborty as a Catholic priest. Bombay To Bangkok Nagesh Kukunoor’s comedy-n-crime caper is Nagesh Kukunoor’s first film shot abroad. The first of his three releases this year, it also is his second for Subhash Ghai’s banner after Iqbal, and stars Shreyas Talpade, Naseeruddin Shah and Thai actor Lena Christansen. As its blurb goes - Same Same, But A Little Different! Jodhaa Akbar UTV’s and Ashutosh Gowariker’s magnum opus about Emperor Akbar and his Rajput beloved Jodhabai is the first mega-budget release of the year. Apart from A.R.Rahman’s music, which always tends to be a cut above in Gowariker’s films, it brings back the Dhoom:2 super-pair of Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai. A bumper opening is a foregone conclusion, though the merits will decide its final status.
FEBRUARY-MARCH Sunday Rohit Golmaal Shetty teams up yet again with Ajay Devgan in his first team-up with Ayesha Takia. A caper film from Kumar Mangat and Eros International, its USP is the image-breaking casting: Ajay is a corrupt cop, Irrfan Khan is a comic who even dances and enacts the ten-headed Ravan in a sequence, Ayesha Takia plays a dubbing artiste and Arshad Warsi is not doing comedy! Right, every day is not Sunday. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na This is Aamir Khan’s production to launch his nephew Imran Khan opposite Genelia D’Souza, Riteish Deshmukh’s lucky mascot co-star in his debut. Writer Abbas Tyrewala turns director. Considering Aamir’s record and that of the director (Munnabhai MBBS et al) this small film could be special too. Roshan Samir Karnik directs an individualistic film again. It talks of how a small boy named Roshan motivates a cancer specialist to bring back his own idealism that he had forgotten since he has had a crippling accident. Bobby Deol plays the doctor and Kangana Ranaut the girl who dumps him. The Eros International film is about hope turning the immune system around. Mehbooba Afzal Khan’s long-delayed love triangle with Eros stars Sanjay Dutt as a rich New York playboy, Manisha Koirala as the self-respecting girl whom he betrays and Ajay Devgan as his younger brother who respects both women and values. The last completed film of the legendary Anand Bakshi, it is the late lyricist’s only film with Ismail Darbar. Race Tips and Abbas-Mustan are likely to wash off their smudged reputations after Naqaab with this crackerjack Abbas-Mustan thriller with Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Sameera Reddy and Katrina Kaif. Pritam’s music is said to be a highlight. Ek - The Power Of One Bobby Deol’s sheer goodwill and talent sails him through his frequent box-office calamities and gets him plum assignments like this Sangeeth Sivan film for K Sera Sera which is an offbeat thriller with Nana Patekar and Shriya Sivaji Saran. Woodstock Villa Hansal Mehta’s tale about swiftly-changing moralities in today’s world in this second Balaji Telefilms-White Feather Films co-production after the successful Shootout At Lokhandwala. After a businessman’s wife disappears, ransom demands follow. A chilling murder mystery with elements of erotica, the film marks the debut (finally!) of Sikandar Kher with Neha Uberoi (seen in Lovedale, one of the Dus Kahaniyaan). Black & White Subhash Ghai is out to prove that he will not direct only big-budget musical extravaganzas. In this socially-purposeful tale, he has a Muslim boy (Anurag Sinha) on a mission to blast a bomb at Red Fort on August 15. He comes to stay at the nearby Chandni Chowk, and encounters a bunch of characters that makes him question his fundamentalist beliefs, realizing that India is not about black and white characters but of a colourful and loving lot. Anil Kapoor and Shefali Shah play the Hindu professor and his wife who do so much for this man on a monstrous mission. God Tussi Great Ho Eros’ romcom with Amitabh Bachchan playing God literally, it marks the debut of writer Rumi Jaffrey (Jodi No.1, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi) as director. A wannabe TV anchor (Salman Khan) blames God for all his problems, including not being able to tell a girl he loves about his feelings. God gives him the power to run the world for seven days and then things really go haywire! Dulha Mil Gaya - Say Yes To A Relationship Shah Rukh Khan does a cameo in this Fardeen Khan-Sushmita Sen love story. Mudassar Aziz directs this film produced by Maverick Productions and Insight Productions.
APRIL U Me Aur Hum Ajay Devgan joins the list of stars-turned-director with this Kumar Mangat-Eros co-production, also directing his wife Kajol in their first team-up since his 2000 production Raju Chacha. The story is under wraps, though it is said to be - what else? - Hollywood-inspired. Love Story 2050 This futuristic saga introduces Harman Baweja, projected for years now as the Next Big Thing. Priyanka Chopra has a dual role in this science fiction saga shot Down Under. Harry Baweja directs, and Anu Malik gets to sink his creative teeth into a meaty project for the first time since Jaan-E-Mann. Bhootnath From God, Bachchan shifts to ghost - and this latest BR Films’ venture is directed by Ravi Chopra’s assistant Vivek Sharma. Another USP: Bachchan sings a hip-hop song for Vishal-Shekhar, and Shah Rukh Khan makes a special appearance. Har Pall Multiple awards winner Jahnu Barua returns with another offbeat subject. Producer Tito is back after the ‘80s and Dharmendra, Preity Zinta and Shiney Ahuja star in the emotional drama. Alibaug Sanjay Gupta takes another offbeat break from his dark films to narrate a story of nine college graduates who celebrate their last night with one of their professors (Sanjay Dutt) to discuss what they learnt outside academics before they step out of the cocoon into the real world. Hijack Eros’ film about an ex-pilot and an airhostess saving passengers after a hijack bid. But before that the former pilot has to exorcise the demons of his past. Shiney Ahuja and Esha Deol star with K.K.Raina as the terrorist.
MAY Sarkar Raaj Will it usher in the Bachchan raaj and bring back Ram Gopal Varma’s clout after duds galore is the royal question. Joining Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in this sequel to RGV’s last success, Sarkar, way back in 2005.
JUNE-JULY Money Hai Toh Honey Hai Hannsikaa Aap Kaa Surroor Motwani reportedly lost a few kilos to get in shape to star in this Eros comedy romantically against Govinda. Now if that isn’t a humorous start to this comedy, what is? Drona Abhishek Bachchan tries a SFX-heavy superhero-like film. For good measure Priyanka Chopra is his bodyguard and has trained for some special action skills. AB Jr.’s buddy Goldie Behl is at the helm. Kay Kay Menon is there too in this Eros presentation. Mission Istaanbul Testosterone spills over in this action drama said to be based on a major international terrorist’s life. Suniel Shetty, Shabbir Boxwala and Balaji Telefilms co-produce this actioner that stars Suniel himself with Viveik Oberoi, Zayed Khan, Shriya Saran and newcomer Shweta Bharadwaj. Apoorva Lakhia reunites with his first music man Anu Malik, for whom Abhishek Bachchan will sing.
AUGUST Sinngh Is Kinng Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s fourth film with his favourite Akshay Kumar is directed by Anees Welcome Bazmee and repeats Katrina Kaif with Neha Dhupia and Vinay Pathak. Shot in the Gold Coast, it is an action comedy. Pritam scores the charttoppers.
SUMMER & LATER Tashan Yash Raj Films have to redeem their reputation as a hit banner, and likely to do the job is their hi-octane action film written and directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, the Dhoom series writer. Anil Kapoor, Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor return to YRF after gaps of 17, 11 and 5 years respectively. And YRF staple Saif is there too. Roadside Romeo Walt Disney enters Hindi cinema. This first collaboration with YRF is India’s first animation feature that has major stars like Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor doing the voiceovers. Jugal Hansraj directs. Wanted - Dead Or Alive Boney Kapoor’s remake of the Southern hit Pokhiri has Salman Khan with Ayesha Takia and Vinod Khanna. Choreographer Prabhu Deva returns to Hindi films after Lakshya - but as director too. Eight By Ten Thrills with a supernatural element is what Nagesh Kukunoor’s film is about. Akshay Kumar steps outside masala mainstream to play a psychic, with Sharmila Tagore and possibly Shahid Kapoor in this Percept Picture Company film. Ghajini (Tentative title) Aamir Khan develops his physique to do his first action drama since Sarfarosh. Produced by the actor himself, it generates sky-high expectations after Taare Zameen Par. With him are the South original’s director A.R.Murugadoss and leading lady Asin, who could well be the next superstar from down there after Sridevi. Krrazy 4 A psychiatrist and four of her patients present a case of satire. This is Filmkraft’s first comedy and first project not directed by Rakesh Roshan. Juhi Chawla is the lady doc and Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan, Rajpal Yadav and Suresh Menon are the crazy four. Jaideep Sen directs. Kismet Connection Aziz Mirza returns to direction after 5 years and does his first-ever non-Shah Rukh Khan film with Shahid Kapoor and Vidya Balan. Tips are the producers of this romantic comedy. Hello Atul Agnihotri attempts direction again, basing his film on Chetan Bhagat’s best-seller One Night At The Call Centre. Sharman Joshi, Sohail Khan, Ishaa Koppikar, Gul Panag and Amrita Arora star with Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif in cameos. Yuvraaj Subhash Ghai is back to what he does best - musical love stories. Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif play reel loves again, and Anil Kapoor is the third angle. Set in Europe, this expensive extravaganza revolving around music has the infallible Rahman-Gulzar combo. Fashion If reports are to believed, Priyanka Chopra’s role and performance can bag her the National award in the latest Madhur Bhandarkar social expose on the dark side of the fashion world. Dilli 6 Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra scripts an autobiographical film about his early years in Delhi. Abhishek Bachchan plays the protagonist. Sonam Kapoor is poised to better her Saawariya b-o. debacle. Karzzzz The first of three Himesh-athons produced by T-Series. Himesh replays Rishi Kapoor’s role in Subhash Ghai’s film Karz. Urmila is Simi Garewal. Himesh has no cap and on the anvil is his unique take on the cult song Om shanti om. Satish Kaushik directs. Kajrare Pooja Bhatt spins an Indo-Pak love story with a thrill element. To be shot partly in Morocco, we expect a humdinger music score from the Himesh-Sameer-Pooja-T-Series combo. A Real Love Issstory John Matthew Matthan spins a romcom with a tapori element. Himesh again. Chandni Chowk To China The sultry Deepak Padukone teams with King Midas Akshay Kumar in this Nikhil Advani thriller, India’s first film probably to be shot in China. Besides Tashan, this is Akshay’s second tryst with action after an era of hit comedies. Aashayein John Abraham and Komal Chak De! India Chautala play cancer patients in this emotional Kukunoor vehicle. Ugly And Pugli Guess who play the title roles? Ranvir Shorey and Mallika Sherawat! No doubt an after-effect on Pritish Nandy Communications of the success of their Pyaar Ke Side-Effects, this ‘kinkiest comedy with punches and thuds’ is directed by first-timer Sachin Khot. Run Bhola Run Govinda is Bhola in this madcap funfest written and directed by ace funnyman Neeraj Vora. Tusshar Kapoor, Tanushree Dutta, Upen Patel and Ameesha Patel co-star in this Shree Asthavinayak Cine Vision venture. Shortcut Neeraj directs Anil Kapoor’s second offbeat production with Akshaye Khanna. Arshad Warsi co-stars.
