U.S. TOP 10

Still from TitanicTitanic was as frozen as an iceberg at the premier position for the seventh consecutive weekend, collecting $26 million over the weekend. The film actually recorded a 3 per cent increase in collection, a record for a film at the end of its second month in release. The film has completed $300 million within 45 days, destroying Jurassic Park’s earlier record of 68 days for the same gross. Its per screen average remained the highest in the Top Ten and the film moved up in the all-time Top Ten list at the US box-office, taking up the seventh position right behind Return Of The Jedi, which has a US domestic gross of approximately $310 million. It looks like the film is now headed for a $500 million domestic gross. Internationally, the film has crossed the $300 million mark already, bringing its total gross to-date to $600 million. If the ship doesn’t slow down, then a $1 billion gross is a reality, shattering the earlier $913 million world record gross of Jurassic Park.

Opening at the second position with great expectations was Great Expectations, collecting close to $10 million last weekend. The film stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Ethan Hawke, Robert De Niro and Anne Bancroft. And yes, it is a modern update of the classic, probably going the Romeo and Juliet way of the same studio, Twentieth Century Fox.

Good Will Hunting, Spice World and As Good As It Gets followed in the third, fourth and fifth positions, collecting $8.5, $7 and $6 million respectively. Sony Pictures’ Desperate Measures also made its debut last weekend, making around $6 million at the sixth position. The film stars Michael Keaton and Andy Garcia. The last new film to open in the Top Ten was Buena Vista’s Deep Rising with approximately $4 million. Last, but not least, what Monica Lewinsky did or did not do probably helped the presidential sex scandal comedy, Wag The Dog, which was at the seventh position with approximately $4.5 million.
