Ek Hi Jaam
Venus; Rs. 30
Contrary to what the title suggests, this album is no celebration of wine and it’s intoxicating effect. It is a collection of six rather austere ghazals rendered by the leading playback singers of the day. The opening number, Sagar likkha... is sad and sorrowful to which Kumar Sanu does full justice with his soulful rendition. Aye mere dil... by Hariharan and Jaa re jaa.. by Suresh Wadkar reflect melancholic mood. The flip side has the deep baritone of Bhupinder Singh casting the magical spell with Mrinal in Agar zindagi.... The peppy and lively tones of Aaj ki gulabi sham... do well to break the sad monotone. Mere sapno ke sathi..., a duet by Udit Narayan and Mrinal, concludes the album on a soft and silky ghazal grid. However, music by Tapas-Babun lacks innovation. A passable fare by all means.

Sona kitna sona hai Sona Kitna Sona Hai
Tips; Rs.50
This remixed version of popular hit numbers, has been interestingly named. So Sona Kitna Sona is called bahut sona mix, Nahi hona tha is ho gaya mix, Do dil mil rahe hai is sweetheart mix, and so on. Like any other remix album, this too has heavy beats and some English lines thrown in for effect, which fail to make any impact. But the good thing is that the the original soundtracks have been remixed, which makes for a thorougly enjoyable fare.

Ek main aur ek tu Ek Main Aur Ek Tu
Tips; Rs. 45
A Valentines' special, this cover version of romantic duets will have the lovers swinging to its tunes. The compilation has been carefully done to include lively and peppy numbers. Abhijeet, Sonu Nigam and Sikander pair up with Sadhana Sargam for different numbers. But these singers don't do justice to any song, and are not even half as effective as the original singers. And why is Sadhana the only female singer?

Radio Blast Hits
Milestone; Rs. 60
The album comes with a warning: Can cause fatal dance cravings. Rest assured, things are not as dangerous as suggested. But for party enthusiasts, it would be a good addition to the collection. This medley of dance classics includes excerpts from all time hit dance numbers. The first medley Dance all nite has the all time favourite Kung fu fighting and Abba’s Dancing queen... We’re gonna party has the popular soundtrack, Pretty woman. Side B has a medley of good ole rock numbers, and the last segement of medley Dancing on the stones has some fast foot-tappers that will keep the dancers happily boogie-woogieing. Not phenomenally mind-blowing, nonetheless a neat compilation.

Dance Nation1 Dance Nation 1
Plus; Rs. 75
This is one album music lovers would not like to miss. What with N Trance’s version of Stayin Alive, Lorna B’s red-hot I’m on fire, Steel Pulse’s Brown Eyed Girl, Linx’s foot-tapping Billy Jean and Looney Choones’s X Files lined side by side in one album, it won’t be surprising if youngsters' feet keep dancing to the music! Dance music aficinados should thank Plus music for this bonanza.

Lie to me - Jonny LangLie To Me - Jonny Lang
PolyGram; Rs. 95
A strong, gritty sound of drums and bass guitar for lovers of rock. The album gets off to a good start with Lie to me, a peppy number, and then cools off with the sultry Darker side. While Good morning little school girl reflects a strong jazz influence, slightly at odds with the other, more rock-oriented numbers. An average album for rock fans.

Golden Piano GOLDEN PIANO
Plus Music; Rs. 75
More magic from Disney. And this time Mickey Mouse, Winni the Pooh, Alice of the Wonderland fame, and Alladin, aboard his magic carpet, have Richard Clayderman and Kentaro Haneda for company. The fairy tale family’s favourite ditties come to us from the fingers of these two musical geniuses. The sonorous strains of their piano soothes away the fretful frown from your forehead and transports you into a golden world of enchantment, far removed from the cares of this world. Bibbidi bobbidi boo...yes, it’s pure magic and proves once again that music needs no words.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK

EK THA DIL EK THI DHADKAN
Time; Rs. 34

The music for this film, composed by Anand Raaj Anand and Surendra Sodhi, comes like a breath of fresh air, and has a subliminal quality about it. Add to this Javed Akhtar’s simple, romantic lyrics which are like the icing on the cake. The songs don’t make much of an impact initially, but after hearing them a couple of times, the melodious tunes keep playing on your mind. The album begins with one of the best songs Resham jaisi ye baahein. Abhijeet renders it feelingly, bringing out the romance in the song, and the overall effect is haunting. Baahon mein aao zara, again sung by Abhijeet, is equally mesmerising, while Udit Narayan’s Tum to chal diye, sung with masti, will surely woo back any angry maiden. In keeping with the theme of the film, it is music from the heart, which reaches out to the romantic in every heart.
