After
a long gap, Surpiya Pathak is back on the small screen with Aatish
Kapadias Khichdi. Over to Pathak.
Were
you surprised when you were offered the role in Khichdi?
(Laughs) Surprised! Not really because I have know Aatish for a
long time. Also, though I have been away from the limelight, offers
were trickling in. Only, I wasnt taking them because my kids
were too small. By the time Khichdi came my way I was preparing
myself to come back to acting as my kids have grown-up and dont
need me all the time.
o,
did you take up the role immediately or did you think over it?
When I got the script I liked it immensely. I told Aathish that
even if I didnt do it, he has an excellent script and it will
do well. I had to talk things over with my kids and husband. My
kids needed to be told that their mother wouldnt be around
all the time. But they were very sweet and even my husband was supportive.
Thats how I accepted the role and I am glad that it is turning
out to be nice.
Tell us about the role you are playing?
I play the elder bahu, Hansa. Shes this innocent, naive, honest
woman who represents the child in every human. Shes doesnt
enjoy working but is very good at heart. I cant really explain
the character to you because it is difficult. You will have to see
the serial to understand her.
Do
you relate to the character?
No, theres nothing about me in her. But yes, I do feel that
I would like to have the innocence that she has retained in her.
I read this book Little Prince in which a boy loves to draw. He
draws a boah constricter which swallows an elephant but when he
shows it to the elders they say hes drawn a hat. Here the
author asks, Where has the child in us gone? Why cant
they understand what he has drawn? I think this surmises the
character of Hansa.
The last serial you were seen in was Mohandas BA LLB which you had
produced? Any plans of producing another serial?
Yes,
Pankaj Kapoor and I want to produce a serial. We have an interesting
subject with us. It is an emotional drama with elements of thrills
in it.
How do you feel about making a comeback alongwith your mother Dina
Pathak?
Acting with my mother per se, is not something new. I have acted
with her earlier too. Shes a wonderful actress and theres
a lot of give and take between us. I love working with her because
of the intensity and rapport we share.
Did you miss being away from the camera?
Not really. But I am glad about coming back because I love the camera.
i really love acting and am happy doing that.
Would you be doing films?
I would love to go back to cinema, especially the new kind of cinema
that is coming up. But again it all depends on the subject and the
role. I dont want to be just a background in a film.
How did your kids react to the serial?
Oh, they just loved it. They are such gems.
