Faced with tough
competition from cable TV and waning interests in serials, American
television networks are coming up with new programmes to attract
viewers with one of them already airing a reality show in which
a bachelor selects a partner from among 25 girls. The new show on
ABC network promises dating, romance, pathos, visits to exotic places,
fierce competition among beautiful young women and a bachelor looking
for a mate. In short, it has all that a romantic movie offers but
for this time it is for real.
The network
selected 31-year-old Alex, a Harvard-educated businessman, and 25
young women, among them lawyers, doctors, waitresses and teachers,
after a nationwide search. In the first episode of the six-part
serial telecast yesterday, Alex was introduced to the women at a
cocktail party and after mingling with them, he selected 15 and
sent the other ten back home. He presented a rose to each of the
women he invited for next episode. Each woman had the right to reject
invitation but none did, and at least one who was rejected was crying.
Over the next five episodes, the number of romantic hopefuls will
continue to narrow, from 15 to eight, then four and, ultimately,
to the one woman who captures Alexs heart.
The bachelor
will travel to romantic locations with the ladies, introduce them
to his friends and family and visit their hometowns to meet their
parents, all in an effort to identify the woman with whom he is
most compatible. At the end of the journey, the young man will have
had an unforgettable experience, made new friendships and, quite
possibly, found true love. But the question is: if he pops the big
question, will the lady accept?
