Pammal K Sambandam
Kamal Haasan’s next

One caught up with a relaxed Kamal Hassan on the lawns of AVM Garden. A report in a Tamil daily said about ten Malayalee directors working in Tamil films while the locals are idling. “What is wrong with it? I was first recognised by the Malayalam industry and only later did I get accepted by the Tamil industry. The greatness of our Tamil culture is that we accept everyone with open hearts and that is where a Tamizhan stands. For political gain, MGR might have been depicted as a Malayali but in films and in the public, he was not treated any different. Today the world is shrinking to a size of the laptop. With my laptop, I can read Screen as well as other publications on the net. I need not buy a paper anymore,” said Kamal. “We now have Dalit writers and they are the best. I think the merging of Dalit with the mainstream will happen only if we plow the ground afresh and sow fresh seeds. Till then the anger in them will not subside,” felt Kamal. It was now time for Kamal Hassan to join the team of Pammal K Sambandam (PKS).

Director Mouli was all praise for his hero and other crew members for their co-operation. It came as a surprise that even Simran was praised by Mouli and Kamal Hassan for her performance in the film. Crazy Mohan has written the screenplay and dialogues for nine films of Kamal Hassan. Stunt master Vikram Dharma plays Kamal’s master who acts as his assistant. Sneha and Abbas play the married couple. “Abbas’s role is very different from the usual lover-boy image,” said Mouli.

Talking about the reports that certain scenes from Aalvandaan were deleted in the theatres after it was released, Kamal said, “A movie is like a daughter. You can count yourself lucky if you get a good son-in-law.” He said that the film Narren, directed by Ravikumar with him in the lead has been shelved but they would be coming together for another film.

When queried about Marudanayagam, the actor laughed and said, “I shall restart the film when I get Rs 40 crores.”

Punnagai Desam
A sure hit: Chowdhury

Ten years ago, Chowdhury produced Puthu Vasantham, directed by Vikraman and had newcomers Murali, Sithara and Anandbabu in the cast. The film went on to be a big hit and started off a trend of small budget films with new directors and new faces. Chowdhury continued this policy of small is beautiful and today he is known to have introduced around 32 directors in Tamil film industry. The only deviation from his earlier policy has been that he now signs ‘stars’ including the young brigade like Vijay and Prasanth for he believes that the initial pull to the theatres is a must.

“I knew that Punnagai Desam, directed by Shajahan was turning to be a good film. The cost went up more than my budget. I thought of releasing the film just after Diwali to avoid the rush. After seeing the entire film, I am ready for the Pongal festival competition. Like Puthu Vasantham, this film will be a big asset to my banner. The Tamil film industry is going to witness a turnaround. Coincidentally, SA Rajkumar who gave music for Putu Vasantham has given his career best in this film. I keep mum if I am not quite satisfied with my film but this time I am openly telling saying that the film is going to be a hit,” said a beaming Chowdhury. The audiocassette sales has already proved that Chowdhury is on the right track. Tharun, a top draw in Telugu, makes his debut in Tamil who saw the film has made Chowdhury promise him that if the film is remade in other languages, he would play his role once again.

The film is about three friends Tharun, Hamsavridhan and Thamu, who do their best to see that their friend Kunal wins in a song-dance competition and become a big singer. Sneha is the leading lady. The film has cinematography by L Mathi. Singer Malayasia Vasudevan plays the music director on screen.

Charlie -Chaplin
Prabhu-Prabhu Deva-starrer in Malaysia

Prabhu and Prabhu Deva come together for the first time in Charlie -Chaplin, directed by Shakti Chidambaram. “The film is about martial problems. From the title, it may seem like a comedy film but its not so. The film treats a serious subject with a touch of humour. Even small things can upset a suspicious wife and drive a man to the arms of another woman. A small incident is shown to drive home the point. Prabhu and Abirami stop at a roadside astrologer sitting with a parrot. The parrot pulls out picture of Lord Murugan with wife Vaali. The astrologer tells that the card signifies that Prabhu will have two wives. Repeated trials bring out the same card and Abirami gets very upset. This starts off in her the thought that her hubby is two-timing her,” revealed the director of the film.

The film has turned out well and producer Khaja Moideen has decided to can the songs in Malaysia. The dances of Prabhu Deva with Gayatri Raghuram, daughter of choreographer Raghuram, are said to be very sensuous and sizzling.

Cinematography by Sivakumar and music by Bharani are the other major credits of the film.
