V
Shantaram Awards was instituted by the V Shantaram Foundation in the
year 1993. And hence it has traveled a long path of glory and has
embraced the new millennium with renewed vigor and a greater sense
of commitment. This year the awards will be held on November 18 at
the Film City, Goregaon, Mumbai at 6 pm
History
of the Awards
Eminent practitioners
from the field of Indian Cinema, the likes of Satyajit Ray, Mani Ratnam,
Kamal Haasan, Bharatan, Shyam Benegal, Gulzar, treasure the V Shantaram
Awards. People of stature of Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Shyam Benegal,
AC Trilokchander and Tarun Majumdar have provided credibility to the
V Shantaram Awards by presiding over as chairman of the jury.
Similarly personalities
like PC Alexander, (Governor of Maharashtra) and Vilasrao Deshmukh
(1993), SB Chavan and Amitabh Bachchan (1994), Balasaheb Thackeray
(1995) and Manohar Joshi (1997) have all graced the awards ceremonies.
The categories
for the awards to be held this year are Best Film - Gold, Silver and
Bronze; Best Director - Gold, Silver and Bronze; Best Children Film
- Gold, Silver and Bronze; Special Jury Award - Best Director - Children
Film; Best Children Film Director - Gold, Silver and Bronze; Best
Debut Director; Best Debut Artist; Best Artist - Male; Best Artist
- Female and Best Child Artist.
Profile of
Shantaram Foundations:
The
foundation was instituted by Late Dr. V Shantaram on November 18,
1977. He continued as its Chairman till his death in 1990. His son,
Kiran V. Shantaram, who has been a trustee from the inception of
the Foundation, became the Chairman then.
The aims and
objects of the foundation is: Development of the art and culture
of India.; promotion of scientific research in the field of production
and exhibition of motion pictures including childrens films
and television films; assisting persons desirous of undertaking
such research; establishing a full-fledged library of rare books
on all aspects of cinema, television, art and culture of the people
of world. Open to all interested in reading and reference; investigating
problems faced by the film industry and to find solution to them;
offering guidelines and advice to Central/ State Governments and
also the film industry; promoting technical advancement by providing
every department the latest techniques and equipments. And to provide
all the people concerned help, advice and guidance in their respective
departments; undertaking study and research in spectator reaction
and on the basis of its results, suggest modifications or changes
in the making of motion pictures from time to time; collection and
maintenance of statistics relating to motion picture industry all
over the world and offering encouragement and incentives for production
of artistic thematic, novel and clean entertainment films on humane,
social and cultural themes, by giving substantial monetary awards
to the producers and directors of such films.
Work already
accomplished by the foundation:
1) Reference
Library: Large number of rare books have been collected and processed.
This process continues day by day. The library was opened on April
30, 1981, at the Rajkamal Studio Complex.
2) Exhibition
and workshops:
Exhibition
of childrens films was sponsored in Mumbai, Delhi and Poona
of Indian and foreign films and consequent on the introduction of
new fast negatives by Kodak and Fuji, three workshops were organised
at Rajkamal Studios between 1981 and 1984.
3) Technical
developments:
Manufacturing of magnetic tapes, this know-how was transferred
to an outside concern and the indigenous tapes are now still priced
at a fraction of the imported ones; electronic Footage Counter was
manufactured and marketed with memory and adjustable rhythm stroke
indications. This has been found to be useful for music recording,
dubbing and mixing; sync Cassette Tape Recorder was indigenously made,
thus saving a lot of foreign exchange. This recorder is used in production
of features and television films; four Track stereo: Recording and
mixing facilities. Four track stereo magnetic coating facility for
release prints. Preview of four-track print in stereo in the theatre,
the only one of its kind in the country; magnetic Heads have been
developed for use in sound equipments editing tables and film projectors
in cinema houses.
All the above-mentioned
technical development and activities were financed by the foundation
and the know-how was given to certain outside parties for manufacturing
and marketing the items. These have proved to be a boon for the film
industry.
4) Publication
and documentaries:
Shantaram was the foundations first publication. It was the
autobiography of the late Dr. V Shantaram. It has been released in
Hindi and Marathi so far and its English version is in printing ;
Bakhar Cinemachi is written in Marathi by the veteran film journalist
and a trustee of the foundation V.P. Sathe; The Portrait Of A Pioneer
is a biographical film made on the late Dr. V Shantaram, covering
a span of 70 years of his life in the film industry (1920-1990).
5) The V Shantaram
Awards:
These were given away for the first time on November 18, 1993, at
the Rajkamal Studio Complex at Parel, Mumbai. The awards were given
to three best directors and three best film producers. The films eligible
for the entry have to be healthy, educative, socially and morally
oriented. The main emphasis is on clean entertainment for the society
as a whole.
These awards
will be given every year on November 18 as this date happens to be
Dr. V Shantarams birthday.
6) Data-Base
on computer:
To have an encyclopedia of the various sections of the film industry
since 1913 to date and to continuously keep the details up-to-date.
The following details will be taken in to account:- Language, C.C.
No., years of release, length, b/w or color, gauge (16mm, 35mm or
70mm) etc.; type of film, music director, lyricist, playback singers,
music companies rights given to etc.; box office performances, quality
performance, performance of the technicians and also the artists;
the number of awards nominated for and also how many won - national,
international and state awards and telecast details of the film on
Doordarshan and any other TV Satellite channels.
Future
programs:
A photo exhibition
on the life of late Dr. V Shantaram and screening of some of his outstanding
films were organised in Delhi recently. These will be repeated at
Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad; organising screening
of some well-known Indian and foreign films; Audio-center for collecting
of music and song records.
If feasible,
to produce 31 series of feature films depicting the development of
mankind during the period of 3000 years after the war of Mahabharat
(Uttar Mahabharat).
Rules and
regulations for Shantaram awards
The
V Shantaram Awards were instituted to appreciate and encourage film
directors, producers and the artistes performing in a film, who showcase
exceptional talent and virtuosity in the portrayal of a particular
role in a particular film thus making a valuable contribution to Indian
cinema.
Rajkamal Digital
and V Shantaram Foundation or any of their associate companies with
or without any collaboration with another company and/or sponsor in
part or whole as the case may be, shall be called the organiser of
the V Shantaram Awards.
3. Sections:
The Awards will have the following sections:
Feature films other than Children films; Children Films.
The Award categories
for section (a) are:(i) Best film; (ii) Best director; (iii) Best
male artist; (iv) Best female artist; (v) Best debut artist.
The Award categories
for section (b) are:(i) Best children film; (ii) Best children film
director; (iii) Best child artist; (iv) The jury award for best director
of children films.
4. Eligibility:
Only those feature
films which were theatrically released in any territory or in any
circuit in India, in any language or dialect spoken in India is eligible
for entry; 1997 Awards - Films released between April 1, 1997 to March
31, 1998; 1998 Awards - Films released between April 1, 1998 to March
31, 1999; 1999 Awards - Films released between April 1, 1999 to March
31, 2000; 2000 Awards - Films released between April 1, 2000 to March
31, 2001.
The proof can
comprise of a newspaper cutting with the release date and the name(s)
of the theatre(s) where the film was released or a cutting from a
recognised trade journal mentioning the details of release; Only those
individuals will be deemed eligible for the awards whose name(s) appears
on credit titles of that particular film; The subject of the film
must uphold Indian values and culture as regards its storyline and
theme. In case of the film being adapted from any work of literature,
the source must be indigenous, may it be a novel, short story, memoir,
biography, autobiography published or unpublished (films adapted from
any literary source in a foreign language or inspired foreign film
will not be eligible for entry); Remake of a film previously made
(in any language) or dubbed version or revised version of a film is
not eligible; The criteria for selection of a film or an individual
for a particular award will be based on the consideration of the extent
of Indianness reflected in the form and content of the film. First
preference will be given to a film tacking human, social, cultural
themes relevant to our society. Second preference will be given to
films providing decent, wholesome and clean entertainment. Films which
are made in very novel and unique style with a sense of social awareness.
Films which do not advocate violence, for the sake of violence and
which do not glorify crime, obscenity or any anti-social sentiments.;
Films and individuals who have already won the V Shantaram Awards
in one year will not be eligible to apply for the same category for
the following two years; All performance oriented awards will be judged
on the basis of its novelty and uniqueness of style. Technical awards
will be given to talents using new techniques and ideas.
5. The
decision of the organiser in respect of matters covered in the rules
and regulations and interpretations of these will be FINAL.
6. A person
submitting an entry for the awards shall be deemed to have accepted
these rules and regulations unconditionally.
7. The
organisers also reserve the right to reject any entry without giving
any reason whatsoever to whosoever concerned with the REJECTED ENTRY.
