Sony Pictures Entertainment on Friday said it was restructuring its network television business. In an interview published in Daily Variety on Friday, SonyCorp of America chief executive Howard Stringer said steps to downsize the unit, Columbia TriStar Television, would take place almost immediately.

A spokeswoman for Sony Pictures, a unit of Japan’s SonyCorp., declined to elaborate, although sources close to the company earlier this week told Reuters that the company was cutting back television operations and halting development of new Prime-time programming due to weak market conditions and its lack of an affiliated network outlet.

Some 50 to 70 jobs could be cut at the unit, with other positions at production companies affiliated with Sony also likely to be affected, the sources have said.

Sony is expected to keep some staff at the unit, as well as several of its existing television series, such as King of Queens, Dawson’s Creek and Family Law.

This November, Cartoon Network spotlights pocket-rocket detective, Scrappy-Doo as Character of the Month. The pint-sized pup Scrappy-Doo is Scooby-Doo’s beloved nephew who is fearless. Unlike his easily frightened uncle, Scrappy is not intimidated by ghosts or ghouls and is willing to stand up to any villain. This zealous approach to mystery solving often leads the small detective into situations he cannot handle. As a result, the Scooby gang needs to keep a constant eye on their youngest team member. Tune in to Cartoon Network this November to watch Scrappy-Doo splat the bad guys, as Character of the Month. In 2001, Cartoon Network focuses the spotlight on a distinct toon star every month. The Character of the Month will take center stage an hour every week.
