Sex movies are in great demand
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
By OurCorrespondent
Despite information and broadcasting minister, Sushma Swarajs
cultural policing and the Central Board of Film Certification
chairperson, Asha Parekhs attempts to hire private detectives
to curb the growing interpolation of films with sex scenes,
Mumbais filmdom has been churning out a large number
of sex-oriented feature films in the last two years, with
an increase from 30 per cent in 1998 to 70 per cent in 2000.
The fact tallies with the figures of the CBFC, which in its
annual report to the government, states that it had given
A certificates to 295 films out of 855 films as
against 197 in 1999.
Consider the titles that are to hit the screen soon: Deep
Fire (a lesbian story), Biwi Naram Padosan Garam, Saali Gharwali
Aur Baharwali, Ghar Mein Ho Saali To Pura Saal Diwali, Kamras,
Yeh Hai Pyar Ka Mausam, Main Hoon Kunwari Dulan, Rangeela
Buddha, Hi Baby and Kuch Kaho Na.
And consider these facts: Main Hoon Pyasi Suhagan has done
extremely good business in East Punjab and Delhi-UP. Yet another
sleazy-film, Andheri Raaton Mein is hot in East Punjab. It
has fetched the highest share especially in Ludhiana.
Distributors Bablee and Bittu released Hot Women in Ludhiana
to a thumping response. The success was preceded by that of
their previous release, Prem Ki Pyasi. And heres a sampling
of their forthcoming films: Kaam Ras and Kaam Karedu.
Machalta Husn opened at Yamuna Talkies, Yamunanagar and also
at Urang, Bhatinda and it has managed to entice the crowds.
The next release at the theatre is Angel of Heat, re-titled
Garmi Ka Shaitan and also Siskiyan.
Vatsyayana Kamasutra which was released on March 9 has turned
out to be a jackpot for the traders. There were swelling crowds
at Sangeet, Ludhiana, Batra, Chandigarh, Lal Ratan, Jallundhar,
Inder Palace and Amritsar. The publicity is good and coupled
with this are the bedroom scenes.
Jalta Badan opened to record houses at Shringar, Ludhiana,
Yamuna Talkies and Yamuna Nagar. Pyaas has opened to a very
good opening at Neelam, Faridabad. And Yeh Kaisi Chahat opened
at Chanda, Amritsar to a good response.
Trade circles in the Northern belt say the entire circuit
is filled with sex-oriented films. In view of this huge demand,
there is a sudden spurt in the making of sex and horror films.
It provides employment to the second rung of artistes who
otherwise have no hopes of making it in filmdom. It also provides
jobs to the veterans who are no more in demand in the big-budget
films.
The producers spend hardly Rs 15 lakh to 20 lakh per film
and shoot mostly at Essel Studios, Trombay. They complete
and release the films with average or below average technical
values within three months of their launch. To them, even
a marginal profit of Rs 1 lakh to 5 lakh is welcome. They
sell films at the ratio of Rs 1 lakh to 3 lakh per territory.
Such films have no overseas market.
