Mumbai’s IMAX to open on March 25

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
By MSM Desai

India’s first ever Imax theatre, which also boasts of the largest dome in the world and a mammoth screen will open on March 25 at its newly completed complex at Wadala East, Mumbai, ushering in a new era in film exhibition in the entire Asian region.

The project costing around Rs 40 crore built by Manmohan Shetty of Adlabs, will be inaugurated by Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal at 5 pm on March 25.

Manmohan Shetty informed Screen that though there are 220 IMAX theatres all over the world, India has scored over China which is yet to complete its IMAX project. “We will open the big screen with two films, Blue Planet and Museum of Egypt, each lasting one hour. The admission rates are Rs 150 per ticket and its seating capacity will be 520. There will be no different classes like the balcony in ordinary theatres but ten shows will be held daily.

The IMAX theatre will be open to the public from March 26. All the government formalities for the opening of IMAX theatre have been completed.

It may be recalled that the Indian IMAX theatre will have to entirely depend on foreign films unlike other theatres, primarily because barring one or two big companies like Disney, nobody makes specialised films for IMAX theatres.

There is no fear of any film made for IMAX being shown legally or illegally by the cable operators anywhere in the world as it has to be seen only on the IMAX screen.

Manmohan Shetty does not foresee making India’s first film for IMAX, himself as the flow of foreign films was more than enough to keep his theatre fed for at least five years.

Besides, making a film for IMAX will not be cost effective as his is the only IMAX theatre in the country. An IMAX film involves more than ten times the cost of the normal 70-mm film.
