Out & About

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Raising a voice
Another star has hit the Indipop horizon. Milestone Entertainment, an Indian music company, has just launched London-born Haroon's Haroon Ki Awaz. Brought up on the music of The Beatles, he used music to "escape loneliness". After forming his band Awaz in 1992, Haroon cut a video called Janeman which became the first Hindi pop song to air on MTV. As for the new album, it is: "aggressive and melodious, with the tabla and dholak mixed with energetic dance beats."

Soft & safe
If your child is bored with all the hard plastic toys in the market, try Beanie Babies. The soft toys are hand-sewn and hand-washable. The fabric and other materials used in the toys are anti-allergic, non-flammable non-toxic. Launched in 1993, Beanie Babies have passed regulations in the USA, the European safety standard and other international exhibition regulations.

And, hey, you cannot produce a counterfeits either, as they all come in alpha numerical codes. The range includes adorable pups, crabs, snakes, chicks and many others. Sold at selected toy stores, each Beanie Baby has its name, birthday and special poem on its heart shaped ID tag.

Coastal feast
Those of you who drool over Malvani cuisine, have something to look forward to. Malvani Masti, the Malvani food festival of at Shoreline, the coffee-shop at the hotel Centaur, Juhu Beach, is on till February 25. A specially designed menu offers exotic fare to all taste buds. Sample some of the coastal favourites, like kurkurit bombil, kolambi bhaat, solkadhi and puran polis. Apart from these specialities, other treats include mutton zanzanit, sungtyanchi bhajee and kelphoolachi bhajje. Hurry and gorge on this spread.

Hunk alert!
IT is, again, that time of the year, when handsome hunks vie for the Grasim Mr India title. Ten `boys' from Mumbai will participate in the contest on February 24 at Netaji Indoor Stadium, Calcutta. And "pleasant" looks are not enough for to become Mr India. Naturally, it is also about "intelligence, wit, grace and compassion"! After all, its also one passport to instant publicity, not to mention modelling and film offers. So watch Vivan Batena, Vikramaditya J.Shukla, Vishal Singh, Sachin Arora, Rajeev Khinchi, Pramod Harish Chandan, Jamshid Zack, Baljeet Manak and Anish Kumar wrestle it out.

Stars on the field
Just a day after the star-studded Jeevan Jyot concert, Sunil Shetty was spotted at the CCI grounds, where he is working on the cricket match featuring Bollywood actors and members of the Indian and Australian cricket teams. Speaking on the February 25 match, Sanjay Dutt said: "I never gave it a second thought. I'm sure that this match will make a difference."

Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Jackie Shroff, Salman Khan, Ashwarya Rai, Raveena Tandon and Urmila Matondkar are some of the other Bollywood names who will be present. From the Indian cricket team, Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly and Ajit Agarkar have promised to be there, while Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh from the Australian team will be present. "The cricketers have been so co-operative. The CCI didn't charge for the grounds.

People are still coming in with contributions," said Shetty about the enthusiastic response. Tickets are available at Rs 6000 per couple. The funds collected, will go to Save the Children foundation which will plan the rehabilitation for schools and hospitals affected by the Gujarat earthquake.

And finally...
Chirpy Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak star Juhi Chawla delivered a baby girl on Wednesday evening at the Breach Candy Hospital. Industrialist husband Jai Mehta was by Juhi's side at the time of the delivery, it is learnt. Among the first visitors to congratulate them were Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan, and Juhi's dad. Juhi hasn't named her daughter yet but she's been consulting several baby books. The actress recently wrapped work on film-maker Suneel Darshan's Ek Rishta in which she stars with Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Karisma Kapoor. Her One Two Ka Four starring Shah Rukh and Jackie Shroff is expected to release in March. Here's wishing Juhi all the very best...
