Naushad honoured

Music maestro Naushad was honoured by the Government of Uttar Pradesh with its highest honour, Shaan-e-Awadh, at a function held in Lucknow recently. Naushad’s first film as music composer was Prem Nagar (1940). During his 60-year career, he has composed memorable music for all-time greats including Ratan, Anmol Ghadi, Mela, Andaz, Babul, Deedar, Aan, Baiju Bawra, Amar, Uran Khatola, Mother India, Mughal-e-Azam, Ganga Jamuna.

Meanwhile, the long cherished dream of Naushad to set up an institution to promote, popularise, develop and preserve the Hindustani Sangeet - both vocal and instrumental - is finally being realised. He is now busy setting up the Naushad Academy of Hindustani Sangeet, which proposes to start a school where new talent will be trained in Indian classical, semi-classical and light music and instrumental music. The Academy will give scholarships to needy and deserving students. It will also start a library, which will maintain recorded music, literary work in classical music and reference material. Another object of the Academy is to give medical assistance to old and needy musicians. The Academy also has plans to give annual awards in the field of classical music.

Eminent personalities from different walks of life - music lovers and fans of Naushad - have agreed to be patrons of the Academy. They include Dilip Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Raj Babbar, Ramesh Taurani of Tips, Gulzar, Mahendra Kapoor, T.H.K. Ghauri (Commissioner of Customs), A.R. Rahman, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, R.K. Pathania (Chief Commissioner of Income Tax), Sudhir Phadke, Majeed Memon, Sudhir Chandra (Addl. Commissioner of Income Tax), Mahesh-Naresh-Suraj Kanodia and S.R. Puraskar (Deputy Commissioner of Police).
