Remember the Titans

What happens when a local high school football team in Alexandria unites with an all black school for the purpose of winning and to hold high their records of championship? Well, there is a lot of understanding and friendship needed, more than just determination and organisation.

The T C Williams High Titans hires a new coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington), which is not appreciated by the team and the steadfast followers of former coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton). There is a clash of egos and fists between the teammates which also comprises black players. Boone is not ready to give up. He gets what he wants. The team goes for a two week camp, where they are geared for the sport.

This film is based on a true story which took place in the year ’71 in the state of Virginia. Interesting portrayal of real life heroes and their emotions is what makes the movie real and something more than a mere football event.

Youngsters can very much identify with the teamspirit and the passion that is shown among the players. The heat generated is sure to catch up with players and connossieures of the game, who know how much the game matters not only to the players but also to their families and the spectators.

Sheryl, Yoast’s eight-year old daughter, played by Hayden Panettiere is one character that stands out. She might not be playing for the team, but her spirit does match and at certain places surpasses the spirit and zest of the players and even the coaches. The clash of life-styles between the ‘football-crazy’ Sheryl and the ‘very-girly’ elder daughter of Boone, provides good humour.

Among the players the real characters of Lewis Lastik (Ethna Suplee) and Ronnie Bass ‘Sunshine’ (Kip Pardue) are very much the life of the team and the captain Gerry bartier (Ryan Hurst), whose exemplary friendship with Big Ju (Wood Harris) crosses all racial barriers. Their moments of joy and victory and the ones of pain and sorrow are really appealing.

Over all, the movie is a great watch and entertaining throughout.
