Shivaji of Marathi cinema dies at 88

Kolhapur, Feb 17: Renowned Marathi actor and national award
winner Dr Chandrakant Mandre died here this afternoon, according
to family sources. He was 88.
He is survived by his wife Shashikala.Born on August 13, 1913
in Kolhapur, Chandrakant started his career as a film poster
painter with the Cinetone company in Sangli. Baburao Painter,
co-founder of the company, gave him the first role in a film.
He acted
in classics like Ram Rajya, Bharat Bhet, Mohityanchi Manjula,
Chhatrapati Shivaji, and had more than 100 films to his credit
during his illustrious career.
Chandrakant
received his first national award for his role in Yuge Yuge
Me Waat Pahili in 1963 and again for Pavana Kathcha Dhondi.
He was also a well-known landscape painter.
While
working as a painter with Shalini Cinetone under the guidance
of Baburao Painter, Chandrakant accidentally got a role in
Savkaari Paash. Chandrakant was one of the few witnesses of
evolution of the Marathi film industry. He had acted in 77
Marathi, 14 Hindi and an English film.
Bhalji
Pendharkar, the doyen of the Marathi film industry, decided
to make a film on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj keeping in mind
the personality and acting of Chandrakant. Besides Chhatrapati
Shivaji, some of the famous movies of Chandrakant are Shejari,
Raja Gopichand, Thorantachi Kamala, Ramrajya, Jay Malhar,
Manache Paan and Bangarwadi.
