Zee TV, India Today hand over Shakeel tapes to police
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MUMBAI,FEBRUARY
13: Zee TV and newsmagazine India Today have handed over to
the police two tapes containing interviews with underworld
gangster Chhota Shakeel following the arrest of diamond merchant
and film financier Bharat Shah last month.
The plea for the tapes were made by the city police before
the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court
on the ground that they want to ascertain whether the voice
in these tapes, purported to be of Shakeel, matched with that
of the intercepted conversations of Shah and Rizvi with Shakeel.
The police
took objection to the interviews which were telecast by Zee
TV and similarly appeared in India Today's online service.
Despite summons none of their representatives were present
in court on Monday. The judge was urged to take action as
per the report made by the investigating officer, additional
commissioner of police S S Kamble or face action under MCOCA.
The judge directed the two to cooperate with the police. However
the representatives of Zee and India Today met Kamble last
evening and handed over copies of the tapes to him.
Special
Public Prosecutor Rohini Salian filed a compliance report
today confirming that both Zee and India Today complying with
the court's directive have handed the tapes containing the
interviews with Shakeel. Following this judge A P Bhangale
disposed of the application made by the police.
Court
eases restraints on Sanjay Dutt
Designated TADA Judge P D Kode, hearing the serial blasts
case, today allowed filmstar Sanjay Dutt to visit any part
of the country for shooting without obtaining the formal approval
of the court. Dutt, released on bail, is facing the charge
of retaining with himself an AK-56 rifle from the consignment
of arms sent here by Karachi-based Dawood Ibrahim for use
in the conspiracy leading to the serial blasts. Possessing
such a weapon in a notified area is an offense under the TADA
Act.
The court
had earlier allowed Dutt to move about anywhere in Maharashtra
subject to certain conditions. This order has now been extended
to the entire country.
