Screen - The Business of entertainment

Marma Desam
A suspense venture
Suspense and horror films always have their own magic with the audience, says producer Balaji Nagalingam, whose latest venture, Marma Desam belongs to this genre.

“There is an element of mystery to the story, which dates back to 200 years ago. A king (played by Devan) has his eyes on a tribal girl (Vani Viswanath), who loves Vikram instead. The king kills both. And Vani, now in the form of a spirit, vows to destroy the king’s family and manages to do just that before her spirit is nailed to a tree. 200 years pass by. The last descendant of the king’s dynasty (Kunchakko) studies in a college. One day, he goes to the botanical garden with friends and they run into the old fort. There, by accident, they remove the nail on the tree. The soul of Vani comes alive. Whether she is able to finish off the last member of the dynasty or not forms the interesting part of the story,” says the producer.

Vasant Kumar wrote dialogue while SP Venkatesh scored the music for the Sai Chandra Combines movie, which is due in February.

Kamini, Marina Beach

Two films from a banner

Entertainment India is coming up with two romantic entertainers. One of them, Kamini directed by Das has Shakila of Kameswari fame and Vahini in the lead. It is about a girl married to an old zamindar. The marriage was performed by his brother-in-law with an eye on the zamindar’s wealth. Shakila soon develops sympathy for the Samaritan zamindar and chides the brother-in-law for his villainy. Two songs titillate the audience. Sai Ramesh has written the dialogue.
Marina Beach, the second film, is about four men and two women who dream of becoming big actors. They arrive in Chennai to fulfil their dreams. Before setting foot in Chennai, they make a promise to themselves that they will not, at any cost, give up their ambition. Two songs in the movie are bound to be a major attraction for the youth. The movie has Babu Ganesh, Aparna, Reva, Balasingh and Viji in the cast and is directed by Chandra.

T Krishna’s son makes debut

Director Muthyala Subbiah recorded a song under the baton of music director Vandemataram Srinivas at the latter’s newly-constructed Anna Recording Theatre. Disclosing this to press persons, Subbiah said, “Hariharan rendered the first of the six songs in the movie. We are going to launch the shoots on Valentine’s Day, February 14, and complete the movie in two schedules in February and March. Our guru, the late director T Krishna’s son Gopichand makes his debut as the hero. It is a love story with loads of sentiment and contemporary social issues, in tune with the earlier movies produced by M Nageswara Rao under this banner. The heroine and other cast and credits will be finalised before we go for the shoot”.

Rathri Gulabeelu

All set for release

Good Luck Movie Makers’ sensuous movie, Rathri Gulabeelu is due for release on January 26. Producer S Krishnamurthy is confident of the Telugu version’s success. The film’s Malayalam version, Nisha Surabhigal was a money spinner.

“Director Sankaran Nair has a special place in Malayalam cinema. This is the first time a Telugu producer has made a film with him in three languages — Malayalam, Telugu and Tamil. We are releasing the film’s Tamil version, Iravu Rojakkal too on January 26. We have plans to dub the movie in Hindi as Raat Ki Kaliyan. It is about four women who faced various kinds of atrocities at the hands of their husbands. How they overcome these travails with the help of a woman lawyer forms the main theme. Abana, Vahini, Rekha and Sindhu play the four girls while Usha Nair, wife of the director, enacted the role of the lawyer,” says producer Krishnamurthy. The film is produced by Krishnamurthy along with D Kanniah.

Chintamani

Remake of Malayalam hit

Golden Lotus Entertainment is coming up with Chintamani, the Telugu dubbed version of the Malayalam hit, Kadara. Says producer KM Subbarayudu, “Shakila of Kameswari fame has done the title role of Chintamani. Our film is a shade better than Kameswari in text and romantic scenes involving Shakila, the latest sex-bomb of the South. Mumbai’s Nayan and Preethi play the lead roles in this mass-masala entertainer which has two songs, one of which, filmed on the lead pair, is bound to be its highlight.”

Benny P Thomas makes his debut as a director and Rajamani has composed the music. The movie is due soon.
