Screen - The Business of entertainment

Khatarnak, last year’s top grosser
According to Mahesh Kothare, who has directed Khatarnak and also played one of the leading roles in it, the film has been a top grosser among the Marathi films released during the year 2000. It had had a spectacular opening at the Prabhat cinema in Pune where it ran for 10 weeks (in daily 3 shows) and was shifted, in continuation, to the Deccan talkies in daily matinee and went on to celebrate its 101-day run in the city. At the time the film was released in Pune, it was mentioned in these columns that, despite the popular TV show Kaun Banega Crorepati, the film had done houseful business during its first week and that the collections during the initial few weeks were eye-catching.
During an informal chat, Mahesh Kothare also disclosed that Khatarnak had done extremely well in some of the centres of Vidarbha and Marathwada, including Nagpur, Amravati and Nanded.

Professor Visarbhole in Kolhapur
Krishna Films’ Professor Visarbhole has been released at the Shahu cinema in Kolhapur from January 19. The title role of the professor has been essayed by the late Raja Gosavi, probably the last one he enacted. The story of the film, written by Bhaskar Jadhav, who has also directed it, is in the nature of a fantasy revolving round a retired professor of the science faculty. In order to while away time, he carries out all sorts of experiments and believes himself to be a research scientist of note. He is sold on the idea that it is possible for human beings to conquer nature and, in order to prove his point, undertakes all sorts of experiments in the small laboratory he has set up in a portion of his house. How his experiments result in bringing about tumultuous changes in his personal life has been conveyed in the film through the medium of fantasy in a hilarious and humourous manner.

Professor Visarbhole, written and directed by Bhaskar Jadhav for producer Kishankumar, a debutant not only in the field of production but also screen acting, has been cinematographed by Sharad Chavan and edited by Vijay Khochikar. Besides Raja Gosavi and Kishankumar, the film also stars Pramod Shinde, Usha Naik, Vijay Gokhale, Kishori Shahane, Chetan Dalvi and Nayana Apte. Jagdish Khebudkar has written the lyrics, which have been set to music by Dinkar Powar.

Sarja Raja in Ichalkaranji

Dattatraya Productions’ Sarja Raja, directed by Pitambar Kale and produced by Dnyaneshwar Vidhate and Sharad Deshmukh, has been released at the Prakash cinema in Ichalkaranji from January 19. Written by Pratap Gangavane, the story of the film is of an off-beat nature revolving round a peasant family and their two bullocks, named Sarja and Raja. The emotional involvement of the mute animals and the members of the family form the core of the narrative. Cinematographed by Prakash Shinde and edited by A Rafiq, the film stars Vijay Chavan, Pramod Pawar, Mugdha Shah, Prema Kiran and Rajshekhar. The musical score is by Achyut Thakur.
