RAJU CHACHA
COURAGE KNOWS NO AGE

Rishi Kapoor who played the great romantic for more than 25 years comes back with a new image after a long gap and plays a mature role

Courage comes in all sizes, someone said, something Veeru Devgan’s Raju Chacha, which is due for release soon, tries to prove to the best of its team’s abilities...

There are these three extremely adorable and much pampered children. They live in a dream house which defies the dreams of the richest children anywhere in the world. Their dream home has rainbows, drive-ways, walls made of acquariums and acres of green lawns. They have everything they can dream of, even things beyond dreams. The only precious treasure they don’t have is a mother. The father showers them with an over-dose of love to keep them happy, that love leads them to grow into spoilt brats as a result. The loving father tries out a number of governesses to try and make up for their mother’s loss. But the little innocent devils succeed in throwing all of them out, making some of them even run for their lives.

The trials and tribulations of the long series of governesses ends with Anna (Kajol). She is a beautiful orphan herself, whose only dream is to belong to a family. She tries changing the devils into angels of modern times. It is a very difficult job but Anna refuses to give up. She knows how children have to be treated, how they have to differentiate between wrong and right. Her job keeps growing more and more difficult as the children grow up but she stands by her decision to change the devils into angels, change their hell into a loving home.

Soon they have a young neighbour, Shekhar (Ajay Devgan), a professional conman with a heart of gold. He has a side kick, who’s forever in love with life, love and laughter. Shekhar is in search of a pot of gold. He meets a more precious treasure, instead — he meets Anna and falls in love with her. He loves her with the intention of robbing the children, their father and their dream home. He ends up hopelessly in love with Anna. The only reason he wants to live now is to steal Aana’s heart. Will he succeed in this most delicate mission? How can he steal love?

Meanwhile, there is trouble brewing around the house. A motley group of evil men tries every mean trick to rob the family of its treasures. They almost succeed in their wild mission. Till the three little kids more than prove that courage comes in all sizes, all ages. The kids fight their best to outsmart the devils. A game of wits follows. Who will be the winner? Who the loser?

What happens to Shekhar’s love for Anna? Well, for one thing, it naturally changes Shekhar. If love can move mountains what is this young conman, Shekhar, with all his cunning and power? Ajay Devgan and Kajol come together for the first time after they got married last year.

Producer Ajay Devgan claims it is the most expensive Hindi film made in recent times. One set alone cost Rs five crores. The animation shots and the special effects are comparable and even beyond compare in some scenes, to some of the best films made in Hollywood today.

Rishi Kapoor who played the great romantic for more than twenty-five years comes back with a new look, a new image after a long gap and plays a mature and major role. A meaningful film with a message for both the young and the old. The film is sure to set a new trend and inspire a new kind of filmmaking in India, in Hindi films where it has been rarely tried.

The film has some very interesting aritistes playing key roles besides Rishi, Ajay and Kajol — Pramod Moutho, Govind Namdeo, Smita Jaykar, Shahbaaz Khan, Tiku Talsania, Adi Irani and four brilliant child artistes, Harsh Lunia, Manshuk Vaidya, Sakshi Sen and Kewal Chadda. They help in making the story exciting, entertaining, enlightening and even experimental.

The film presented by Bharat Shah together with Veeru Devgan is produced by Ajay Devgan, who makes his debut and directed by brother Anil Devgan, who also makes his debut. Kumar Mangat is the executive producer. Story by Anees Bazmi, screenplay by Robin Bhatt, dialogue by Javed Siddiqi, choreography by Raju Khan and cinematography by Nirmal Jani are other major credits.

Will the dream world, the tussle between the dreams and the realities and the kind of courage that a film like Raju Chacha instil inspire and turn out to be a major surpirse towards the end of the year 2000?
