Gujarati Diary

Screen - The Business of entertainment

Production up by two films
During the year 2000, the production of Gujarati films registered an increase of two over the figure of 1999. Twenty-nine films were certified by the Central Board of Film Certification between January 1 and December 31, 2000, as against 27 in 1999. The films certified during the year under review were Mahiyar Ni Maya, Oonche Re Timbe Madi Maaru Saasru, Piyu Gayo Pardesh, Derani Jethani, Malkay Jo Tu Ek Var, Dalda Leedha Chori Raj, Mota Ghar Ni Laaj, Maa Na Sogand, Ghar Ghungat Ne Gharcholu, Saachu Sathavro Sajan No, Ghar Ek Pankhino Malo, Ooncha Khorda Ni Khandani, Dase Dishaye Maa Dashamaa, Sajan Haiye Sambharey, Taari Mehndi Maara Haath, Palav Bhini Preet, Samajno Chhoro, Mavtar (Krupa Shri Jalarm Ni), Sajan Bina Suno Sansar, Maa Tara Haiya Na Het, Dikri No Mandwo, Kanya Na Daan Kalje Vagya, Kadwa Choth, Chundadi Ni Laaj, Sajan Main Chundadi Odhi Tara Naam Ni, Daldu Chorayu Dhire Dhire, Koyal Tahuke Amba Dal and Dikri To Parki Thaapan Kahewaay.

Of the 29 films certified, 24 have been released. Of the released films Dikri No Mandwo has been a hit, while Dase Dishaye Maa Dashamaa has done good business with films like Mahiyar Ni Maya, Oonche Re Timbe Madi Maaru Saasru, Derani Jethani, Dalda Leedha Chori Raj, Ghar Ek Pankhino Malo, Mavtar and Daldu Chorayu Dhire Dhire, doing average to above average business. Piyu Gayo Pardesh is said to have fared well in the overseas market. All said and done, the picture is anything but bright businesswise, although there has been no let up in production. Maa Baap Ne Bhulsho Nahin was released towards the end of December 1999 but covered a major part of the Gujarat and Saurashtra territory only during the early months of 2000 with spectacular box-office returns. Dikri To Parki Thaapan Kahewaay was released on January 5 with good opening response. Be that as it may, whether the first year of the New Millennium will bring more cheer to the Gujarati film industry in the shape of increased box-office hits remains to be seen.
