Spiderman look out!

Here comes Spider-man, the movie by dan whitcomb los angeles. Boy gets bit by spider. Boy starts acting like spider, though he looks exactly like hollywood heartthrob Tobey Maguire.

Boy becomes super-hero, falls in love with redheaded Kirsten Dunst (woo-hoo!). But Willem Dafoe wants boy dead, because Willem Dafoe is crazy mad and has bad green skin.

If this all sounds vaguely familiar, it should. It’s the plot of spider-man, the movie, which is coming to a theater near you in about a year and a half, after they actually make it.

But the filmmakers and Sony pictures would like you to start getting excited now, so that you will be really, really excited by the time the movie comes out in May 2002 and stand in line for hours. Maybe see it twice.

They would also like all of you Spider Man comic book fans out there to know that they are being extremely careful not to make you mad, because they know how much you like your comic books, even if it seems a little weird to the rest of us.

That means you can expect Tobey Maguire — as spider man and news boy Peter Parker — to wear that familiar blue and red suit and Dunst, as girlfriend Mary Jane Watson, to have red hair and call him ‘tiger’ a lot.

“I’m not trying to put my mark on Spider Man”, director Sam Raimi assured reporters at a giant press conference on the Sony pictures lot. “I’m just trying to bring Spider-Man to the screen.’’

“The audience has a great deal of expectations already inmind”, he said. “they know what Peter Parker looks like, what he sounds like, how he acts.”

Raimi also confessed to being ‘terrified’ at the logistical problems presented by the film, which requires that the lead character swing from one new york skyscraper to another at high speeds, suspended only by ‘webs’, climb walls and otherwise do things that most ordinary people cannot.

Maguire, who has become one of Hollywood’s hottest young stars after leading roles in 1999’s The Cider House Rules and last year’s wonder boys, has been training since July to give himself the look and ‘acrobatic grace’ required for the part.

“I never thought I would be wearing a skin-tight suit day in and day out for such a long period of time, but that’s whats great about life”, he said. “(Spider-Man) is something you play as a child. I’m 25 and still playing in the back-yard.”
Dafoe, who plays mad-scientist Norman Osborn — known as the green goblin after an experiment blows up in his face and gives him that unsightly grinch-like hue — was eager to play the villain as a three-dimensional character with a pronounced dark side.

“Before I even read the script Sam (Raimi) talked me through it and I liked the way he talked about it in such incredible psychological terms”, Dafoe said. “It was really very rich.”

Dunst, who was nominated for a golden globe while still a preteen for Interview with a Vampire and starred in last year’s hit bring it on, said she was excited to be working with Maguire and playing a different kind of character.

“My goal is always to stay a moving target so no one can ever put a finger on me”, she said. “Besides, I’m playing the love of Spider-Man’s life. How cool is that?”

Spider-man, which begins filming mid Jan and intends to wrap before a possible actor’s strike in June, also stars James Franco as Peter Parker’s friend and room-mate.
