Vimla Devi lived with her husband Duni Chand in a village
in Himachal. They had a son and a daughter. One day in October
1993, at night, Vimla Devi went to the aunt of Duni Chand
saying that Duni Chand had not come home the previous night.
The two went to search, and Vimla Devi sent the aunt deliberately
towards a nalla, where the aunt found the body of Duni Chand.
Investigations by police implicated Vimla Devi herself - there
were bloodstains in her house, which matched the blood of
the husband, etc. On November 1, 1993 Vimla Devi was formally
arrested and under interrogation she confessed that she had
killed her husband. At her disclosure the weapons of murder
were found. Police also discovered she had been involved with
another man, and he was arrested too, on they evidence of
her son, who said he had seen them both on the night of murder.
Vimla Devi deposed at the trial that Dhuni Chand used to get
drunk and beat her, and that he was a pervert. That night
he had come home drunk, beat her up. She got infuriated, whereupon
he threatened her with a weapon and said he would kill her.
She snatched a sickle and attacked him, killing him. The son
woke up and came in, and she told the son not to speak to
anyone about this. According to her Duni Chand treated her
very badly. Her stance was self-defence. However, other witnesses
testified that she had killed Duni Chand while Duni Chand
was asleep. The boy also said that the lover of the mother
was very much part of the whole plan and murder. Sessions
court accepted testimony of child against her, but not against
the lover. The lover was acquitted, and she was sentenced
to life imprisonment.

like a grim case: The little seal has suffered a gash on the
side of its face and has an infected eye. In addition, the
seal has been separated from its mother for several days and
suffers from severe dehydration. After cleaning and dressing
the pups wound, Ian puts him under a heat lamp, hoping
against the odds for the best. Scarface,
as the seal pup comes to be known, recovers remarkably well,
and along with three other rehabilitated seals, wins a trip

that will help the nearby Sea Mammal Research Unit of Cambridge
identify and track him.

In Japan, the place where the rice fields meet the forest
is known as Satoyama. The perfectly sculpted terraces, although
created by man are dictated like all living things by nature.
Their stepped patterns are deliberate and yet harmonious with
nature. This is the essence of Satoyama. Each spring the dried
brown fields are brought to life by the rushing waters of
Lake Biwa. The water coincides with a cascade of wildlife.
Turtles, frogs, catfish, birds and a myriad of insects come
to the shallow pools of the verdant rice paddies. Subline
and yet teeming with life, to witness Satoyama is to watch
a haiku unfold before you.
