STAR tops in entertainment, Sahara in evening news

Coinciding with Star TV’s announcement, that Star Plus is the number one Hindi entertainment channel in the country, Sahara TV has said that its nightly 15-minute news bulletins at 8 pm in English and Hindi are attracting TRP ratings better than Zee News and Star News. The Sahara announcement is based on a survey conducted by Tam Media Research and the Star rating rests on a study conducted by A C Nielsen.

While the Star Plus viewership ratings for several programmes have gone along with the phenomenal success of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), Sahara TV is attributing the success of its news bulletins partly to the sophisticated technology used. Emphasising the success of the Star programmes, its co-chairman, who was in the capital recently, said: "Star’s localised programming continues to enjoy unprecedented viewership and ratings in Asia."

The launch of the Star UK service from January 2001, it is expected, would further expand its TV audience outside Asia. Star News would be the first India-focussed 24-hour news channel in the UK, according to a company statement.

Commenting on the good TRP ratings of Sahara News, Mr Mahesh Prasad, president, Sahara TV, said: "The presentation of news is always a challenge but in the satellite TV business, one is in competition with international quality." He added: "Sahara TV has been consistent in putting out a superior value proposition backed by solid investment in the latest technology and first rate human resources." This recognition, according to Mr Prasad, in terms of viewership certified by Tam Media Research is a positive proof that the channel is on the right track.

Elaborating on the channel’s news bulletins, Mr Prabhat Dabral, head of news, Sahara TV, said, "We are often first with the breaking news and this naturally attracts viewership." For instance, said Mr Dabral, "We were the first to announce the news of chief ministers of both Jharkhand and Uttaranchal."
