FICCI to hold international conference next March

The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FICCI) which helped the film industry by expediting the government’s grant of industry status at its first international conference, two years ago, will now hold its second international conference in Mumbai on March 23 and 24, 2001.

Amit Khanna, co-chairman of the entertainment committee set up by FICCI, said that the theme of the two-day conference was yet to be worked out. Meanwhile, the entertainment committee will meet on December 4 to discuss the government’s Communication Bill on the convergence of three important sectors — Information Technology, Communications and Entertainment (ICE). The Government has, through FICCI, sent the draft of the Communications Bill to the Film Federation of India and other bodies representing the entertainment industry, including the music industry, for their comments. The proposed Bill is likely to be presented in the next session of Parliament.

According to Amit Khanna the proposed legislation would have a great impact on the film industry, not only in terms of bringing discipline to its functioning, but also changing the existing patterns of film business.
