SDMI examines hacker data
Nearly
one and a half months after the Secure Digital Music Initiative
(SDMI) challenged hackers to break the five technologies they
are examining to secure music in hardware, the results are
in. Of the five proposed technologies that SDMI still
has under consideration, successful attacks were not identified
on three technologies, and were identified on two, said
SDMIs executive director Leonardo Chiariglione.
SDMIs work is based on the core principles that copyrights
should be respected, but that those who wish to use unprotected
formats should be able to do so. They received 447 submissions
from individuals and teams, each of which has helped SDMI
assess the strengths and weaknesses of the technologies
under consideration. Of those apparently successful
attacks, one of them was not reproduced on additional music
samples as part of our evaluation process. The technologies
that withstood challenge included both watermark and non-watermark
solutions, added Chiariglione. SDMI had originally posted
six technologies but one proponent withdrew its proposal early
in the testing process.
