TURNER
BUYS RIGHTS TO DIETRICH DOCUMENTARY
Turner
Classic Movies has acquired U.S. cable rights to Her
Own Song, a documentary about German-born actress Marlene
Dietrichs tireless efforts on behalf of the Allied
military effort during WWII.
MGM is in final talks for rights to video distribution
and a possible limited theatrical run. The $1 million
picture, which also details a Dietrich love affair with
Army Gen. James Gavin, begins shooting in November.
Dietrich sang and danced her way across North Africa,
Italy, France and Iceland for two years to entertain
the Allied troops. She also stumped on behalf of U.S.
War Bonds and helped to spread the Allied message over
Radio America.
The documentary will be telecast in late 2001, timed
with the centenary of Dietrichs birth, said Tom
Karsch, executive VP and general manager of Turner Classic
Movies. Any theatrical run by MGM would precede that
and video releases would follow the cablecast. We
try to focus our original programming on interesting
stories, and I cant think of too many more interesting
ones than one about Marlene Dietrich, Karsch said,
She was such a complex and fascinating figure.
Dietrich performed for the troops for an entire
two years, longer than anybody else, said writer-producer
Karin Kearns, She later also became a very great
supporter of famed Nazi hunter Beate Klarsfeld after
the war. Dietrichs grandson, J. David Riva,
is serving as a producer.
