Sircar centenary celebrations on Nov 18
Birendranath
Sircar, founder of Calcuttas New Theatres and creator
of several immortal stars of cinema, is a man whose footprints
are imprinted in the annals of Indian motion-picture history
for his contribution to the development of Indian cinema.
His birth centenary is to be celebrated by Cine Society, one
of Indias oldest film societies, on Novembeer 18 in
Mumbai. Speakers at the press conference to announce this
recalled Sircars dedication and devotion to achieving
the highest aesthetic standards in cinema. New Theatres Studio
came up in Tolleyganj, a suburb of Calcutta in February 1931
with Sircar at the helm of affairs along with a talented team
of Nitin Bose, Mukul Bose, RC Boral, Pankaj Mullick, Amar
Mullick, Yusuf Mulji, Uma Shashi and KL Saigal. Later to join
them were Prithviraj Kapoor, Kanandevi, Chandravati, Jagdish
Sethi, Molinadevi, Bimal Roy, Hemchandra and Kidar Sharma
as directors, Benoy Chatterjee and Subodh Mitra as script
writers and editors respectively. Its first film in Bengali
was Dena Paona followed by the first Hindi film, Mohabbat
Ke Ansoo.
