Asiacontent.com
to launch MTVIndia site by Ocotber
Asiacontent.com
an internet company that integrates branded content sites
across Asia is getting ready to launch MTVIndia.com in the
country by early October. Asiacontent.com (India) Pvt Ltd
managing director Andrey Purushottam said that the company
would introduce the online MTV site in India soon. Currently,
Asiacontent holds 51 per cent equity in MTV.com while MTV
holds 49 per cent.
He
said Asiacontent was also planning to get into fee-based income
segment in four-to-eight weeks. Under this business, the company
would undertake launching, hosting, managing, marketing and
distributing of any reputed brand, he said. Purushottam said,
Fee-based business is expected to contribute a reasonable
proportion to our revenues. Asiacontent was in the process
of signing with three-to-four reputed brands in the region,
he said. Currently the company has 24 brands in eight countries
including India, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, China,
Korea and Japan.
Purushottam said, Asiacontent and CNET.com - a US-based online
information channel for computers and technology together
have invested $13 million in seven Asian countries except
Japan where CNET.com had no presence through Asiacontent.
According to him, Asiacontent had posted $1.5 million revenues
during the first quarter of calendar 2000 while during the
second quarter it posted $3.2 million. According to industry
observers, Asiacontent was poised to break-even by 2003. However,
Purushottam said he was confident to break even much before
the projected timeframe.
Asiacontent.com
was listed on Nasdaq in April which brought in $70 million
taking the m-cap over $120 million. CNET.com has entered into
tieups with Satyam and Indiainfoline for distribution of content.
Currently, CNET.com was in talks with Yahoo.com and other
leading players, he said.
As per Nasscom estimates, internet penetration in India was
4 million and this is expected to touch 23 million by 2003.
On the other hand, China already has a penetration of 11 million
which will touch the 48 million mark by 2003. We are
planning to cash in on this potential, Purushottam said.
Japan currently has 31 million internet users and this number
would go up to 60 million by 2003 whereas Korea had 6 million
(12 million) and Taiwan had 3 million (9 million), he said.
On ZedNet acquisition of CNET.com, Purushottam said, the complete
ramification of the acquisition and its implication of India
were not yet known. We will come to know this only by
the end of the calendar, he said.
