News In Brief

Screen - The Business of entertainment

Zee to launch Telugu channel soon

Zee TV, as part of its expansion would soon commence its Telugu channel. Now the stage is set for a third satellite channel in Telugu and it should be seen whether it can make any dent in viewership of market leader ETV and Gemini TV of Sun network.

In all probability it would beam programmes from September onwards since it has acquired required software. It would be an entertainment-based channel and the menu would comprise daily soaps, weekly serials, films and film-based programmes, news capsules and news. Zee sources claimed that initially it wants to capture the viewership with regular kind of programmes and after gaining a foothold it would like to introduce some variety programmes. “Our brand image would definitely bring us viewership.

Already advertisers are showing interest in our channel. We are confident of gaining a strong foothold among Telugu channels” claims a Zee official. After studying the market, ETV withdrew its second channel proposal since it felt that there was no place for a third channel. Later Gemini TV announced its second channel Teja and after more than 1 year it commenced programmes recently. It should be seen how Zee finds its place among satellite channels.
