CLASSICAL MUSIC RELEASES

KALYAN DARSHAN RASRANG
Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan
Magnasound, Rs. 75
The album is an good example of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan’s command on the Hindustani classical vocal music. Ghulam Mustafa Khan is one of the most revered and respected gurus in the Indian music tradition. Ustadji’s first album is Bhor Bhayi-Bhairav Ke Prakar was released in August 1999, and was welcomed by his fans the world over. Kalyan Darshan Rasrang is his second album. It features Ustadji’s renditions of Raag Yaman-Kalyan, Raag Hussaini-Kalyan and Raag Hans-Kalyan.

MYSTICISM ON WOODWINDS
Pt. Ronu Majumdar
Magnasound, Rs. 75

India’s leading fluatist Pt. Ronu Mazumdar, in this album, elaborates on Raag Nat-Bhairav, which is considered a khasiyat (speciality) of MAihar Gharana instrumentalists. This is a popular jod raag, whose poorvang represents the Nat aspect, while the Uttarang presents the Bhairav aspect. Mazumdar has been innovative in the use of Pakhawaj in dhrupad style during the jod phase.

MARVELLOUS MARWA
Pt. Shivkumar Sharma
Magnasound, Rs. 100
This album further proves Pt. Shivkumar Sharma’s mastery of santoor. He deals with Raag Marwa here, which is a brooding and profound raag in the alaap phase. As the raag gains momentum during the jod and jhala, Panditji sets the stage for layakari. He then proceeds to present three compositions in graduated tempi of jhaptaal and teentaal. There is interplay of rhythmic patterns in partnership with Ustad Shafaat Ahmed on tabla. Raag Marwa is a thaat raag which graphically portrays the wistful mood of the departing day.
