BBC Resources to provide DTT knowhow to DD
In a deal brokered by BBC Worldwide, BBC Resources has won the contract from Doordarshan to provide technical expertise for implementation of digital terrestrial transmission in the country. BBC Resources will provide DD with a complete blueprint for the introduction of digital terrestrial transmission (DTT) by September-end.

The first phase of the project, a feasibility study, will examine both the business proposition and the technical facilities necessary to provide a viable digital terrestrial transmission service. DD, which currently broadcasts in analogue, is expected to dramatically improve the quality of its broadcasting with the introduction of DTT. Doordarshan has called upon the consultancy skills of BBC Resources to reduce the lead-time for the introduction of a digital terrestrial television service.

The new service is initially planned for the four centres of New Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta and Chennai. "The deal marks a milestone for the BBC. Doordarshan will be the largest client to date to benefit from our unique experience and expertise in the field of digital terrestrial broadcasting," said David Manning, head of BBC Resources, consulting & projects. BBC is one of the first broadcasters to launch DTT in November, 1998. BBC Resources launched its consultancy practice at the NAB exhibition in April, 2000. It has already equipped the BBC and other broadcasters with digital technology, including most recently its support for Botswana Television.
