Beyond Bangla -- ATN World sells time slots to Oriya, Assamese producers
In a unique strategy to increase penetration, Bangla channel ATN World is selling time slots to other language programmers. ATN World is in the closing stages of negotiations with the Assamese and Oriya language producers for the afternoon slot. While the one-hour band at 1 pm will be sold to an Assamese producer for around Rs 7 lakh, the 2 to 3 pm slot will be given to an Oriya programmer. "By telecasting in these two languages, we will be increasing our penetration in the eastern region outside Bengal. Besides, it will enable our infant channel to earn revenue outside the prime time," said ATN International managing director Santosh Kumar Jain.

ATN World is also in the process of farming out the four-hour 3-7 pm slot to the West Bengal Film Development Corporation for Rs 20 lakh. This is the first time that a state-owned body will be buying time slots in a private satellite channel. "The corporation will be airing a variety of shows including social programmes," said Jain.

The channel also plans to start a contest along the lines of Star Plus’s Kaun Banega Crorepati. "The winner will be given a 1,000-sq-ft flat in Calcutta. There will be other prizes as well," said Jain.

Noted actor Mithun Chakraborty will anchor a talk show which will start airing in September. His media company will also supply content for the news programme. ATN World plans to also telecast a 15-minute afternoon news show (Pramila Sambad) exclusively for women, besides the morning and evening news.

ATN International, which runs ATN Bangla and ATN World, is promoted by Santosh Jain. While the promoter holding is 50 per cent, UTI has slightly more than an 8 per cent stake in the company. The balance is held by the public. ATN World is a free-to-air digital channel launched on June 27, 2000, and uses the C-Band Global Satellite beam of Thaicom. It covers a massive chunk of satellite population in 120 countries. The mega Bangla serial Mukhosh slotted for ATN Screen is the first production under the banner of Devgan Entertainment & Software. The channel was launched with ten mega serials.
ATN International plans to launch two more channels - ATN Music and ATN Movies - in the next few months, said Jain. Beyond Bangla: ATN World sells slots to Oriya, Assamese producers.

ATN promoter to launch portal ATN International promoter Santosh Jain, along with a partner, is launching a horizontal portal, indiaallinfo.com, by month-end. "We have earmarked an investment of Rs 5 crore for the project," Jain said. The portal will start with six channels: Bollywood, Sports, Astrology, News, Income-Tax and Company Law.

Other sections like stock market and tourism will be added later. The Website will offer answers to IT and company law queries but will charge a subscription fee for such services, Jain said.
