Zee
Interactive Multimedia head quits
Zee Interactive Multimedia Ltd. business head Hari Goenka
has resigned. He was in charge of broadband access and was
responsible for laying hybrid fibre cable network across the
country.
Goenka earlier served as the deputy chief executive officer
of distribution in the Zee TV organisation. Before that he
was executive director, SitiCable. Zees wholly-owned
subsidiary, SitiCable, has also recently lost several of its
staff to Reliance Industries which announced ambitious investment
plans for its broadband project. DK Pandey, resident director
of SitiCa-ble, has moved to a senior position in Reliances
broadband project. He has taken several people with him. Mohan
Nair, a cable operator and consultant of the Raheja-owned
Hathway network, has replaced him. Earlier, GM Sunil Khanna
left SitiCable to join a dotcom.
With Anthony DSilva moving to international business,
V Chari is believed to be acting-in-charge of SitiCable. DSilva
was president, distribution, and was also looking after the
networks direct-to-operator (DTO) service. Zee will
soon be announcing a person to head its DTO service. Sources
said the network is planning to have a different head for
its DTO project. Besides, the network will have to look at
a replacement for Goenka.
Goenka was put in charge of implementation of the hybrid cable
fibre project, even as D P Naganand was made chief executive
officer of convergence and E-Connect. A wholly-owned subsidiary
called Zee Interactive Multimedia Ltd. was floated to provide
broadband access up to the last mile directly to the consumers.
While SitiCable would look at distribution, Zee Interactive
would focus only on broadband activities of the network. Though
Naganand had overall control over convergence, Goenkas
role was to look after the broadband operations. As business
head of Zee Interactive Multimedia, Goenka started laying
hybrid fibre cable in Delhi. Zee expects to start its broadband
delivery services in the metros on a trial basis within six
months. Zee is using technologies which will enable the network
to deliver broadband services from control rooms up to 50
km. The current distance covered is around 5 km from a single
control room, sources said. The plan is to deliver, stage-wise,
more bandwidth and move to synchronous digital hierarchy for
higher speed and delivery.
Zee plans to lay hybrid fibre cable in 26 cities in the first
phase which will include cities like Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore,
Chandigarh, Calcutta, Madras and Mumbai. Zee Interactive Multimedia
has earmarked an investment of Rs 2,400 crore for the entire
project and is aiming at a 1:1 debt-equity ratio.
Goenkas duty involved a wide range of responsibilities
including obtaining permission for laying hybrid fibre cable,
right of way and working out project costs at the operational
level. Sources said Zee has not applied for permission in
certain territories like Pune, Surat and Warangal. "We
will be doing it soon," a senior Zee official said. "But
with Goenka out, the process may initially slow down. SitiCable
will also have to soon replace the expert staff it has lost
to Reliance," he added.
