Honourably yours

On the whole its a serial that would appeal to viewers of all ages. There will be a different sort of issue to be handled each time and different shades of every character will be brought out Kavita Chowdhary

Kavita Chowdhary is back once again, though after a long gap, but she sure seems as confident and as impactful as she did the last time when the whole country talked about her serial Udaan. It could be rightly said that the serial was sort of a pathbreaker in the sense that it inspired a lot of women all over the country to think about joining the armed forces and even changed the perceptions of a lot of people.

This time she treads the legal path, a social issue once again. In her new serial Your Honour which has been conceived, written and directed by her. She plays a lawyer herself and portrays the various shades that the character goes through both on the professional as well as the personal front. The serial also has Sachin Khedekar and Ali Raza Namdar. The story basically revolves around these three and highlights the judicial system of the country. The work is fictional but the treatment that has been given to it is real, in order to make he people aware of their rights not known to them and the responsibilities not understood.

"I started research on this topic around ’96. It was an enriching process. I went about sometimes as a law student, when I sat and attended some of the law college lectures. And sometimes I sat in the courts listening to and interacting with various lawyers. I had dialogue sessions with them. Not only that, I even went on to observe their personal lives. The way they socialise around with other lawyers and the people around them," says Kavita as she goes about telling us how the research was done. She went to the courts in Mumbai, Kolhapur, Lucknow, Bareli and even Delhi. Well, that’s an extensive and exhaustive process. "You see, the reason why I took so long in coming up with the serial need not be explained now," she adds.

One more element of interest in this serial is that in the first few episodes, Kavita has actually got a well known advocate Shrikant Bhat to play the lawyer. "I thought it would be better if we had a real life legal professional play the role, it would be more original and come across better," she says on being asked the reason. This is what Shrikant Bhat says, "I did not have much of a problem with the acting, its just that I had to learn to say my lines in Hindi, which was not very easy. I had somebody coming to teach me Hindi for this particular job.".

On the whole its a serial that would catch up with viewers of all ages is what Kavita feels. There will be a different sort of issue to be handled each time and different shades of every character is being brought out. "I felt that there was a lot of repetition on television. Too much of family stories and too much of everything. Hence I came up with Your Honour, the people need to know what actually happens with the people who solve other’s problems," is how Kavita explains the purpose of the serial.
