THANKS TO BREAKTHROUGH IN CGI...
Storm is spell-binding!

By Salma Khatib
Warner Bros’ The Perfect Storm released in USA on June 30, and later in UK, has generated a lot of excitement among the international audiences, thanks to the mind-blowing digital effects. The computer-generated images (CGI) in the film is said to be something of a milestone in filmmaking, one never attempted before. George Lucas’s ILM (Industrial Light & Magic) has created the special effects, and have computer-generated a storm more brutal than a real one, which rages and spits with unimaginable force. The storm is the arch villain in the George Clooney-starrer, which destroys a swordfishing vessel named Andrea Gail, and upstages Clooney, the captain of the ill-fated boat. The film, made with a whopping budget of $140 million, is based on a true incident, when a sword-fishing vessel that sailed from Masachusetts, was caught in a meteorological hell. The team of artists at ILM used weather reports and scientific formula to recreate on computers the crashing waves and rolling seas.
The b-o collections prove that the CGI in the film has bowled over the audience. Released around the same time as the Mel Gibson-period piece The Patriot, its collections superceded that of the latter with the five-day collections of the two showing a difference of $100 million.
