Discovery takes school activities to more cities
Discovery Channel has decided to expand its school activities (Discovery Quiz) from five cities to 18 cities across the country, according to the channel’s managing director Kiran Karnik. The channel is also gearing up to take the quiz internationally making it one of its kind in Asia.

Briefing the media in Bangalore, he said the company would take its Discovery Channel Quiz to 18 cities across the country involving around 40,000 students.

In Bangalore, the quiz was scheduled to kick off from July 24 with over 60 schools from across the city participating. The quiz was being conducted in association with Britannia Industries Ltd.

Discovery Channel was planning to introduce the quiz programme in Bangladesh while in Sri Lanka, the channel was already airing a 10-hour block on Rupavahini, the national terrestrial channel which reached over 2.5 million homes. The quiz would be conducted across 25 districts in Sri Lanka covering over 3000 students.

On the quiz programme, Karnik said this was the first education initiative of the channel. "For the first time, school children in the country have come on a common platform challenging each other’s curiosity in a healthy atmosphere," he said. The success of the quiz encouraged the channel to introduce popular events including Face2Face - debate - and Word2Word - essay competition, he said. Karnik said the channel currently had blocks for health and travel and adventure. "We have plans to expand the blocks in a major way," he said.
