It’s ‘good afternoon’ for Indian television

Doordarshan set a trend with its daily soaps in the afternoon which created history. But the satellite channels woke up to the potential of afternoon soaps only a couple of years ago. Today there’s no denying that the afternoon band has slowly emerged as the best slot after prime time.

Prime time slots on DD Metro to be auctioned
Doordarshan is planning to auction DD Metro’s prime time slots once again. One of the prime motives behind the plans is to make DD Metro financially independent.
A few months back, the prime time slots between 7 pm to 9 pm were auctioned to Kerry Packer’s Australian media company Channel Nine for one year. This deal has already assured DD a whopping Rs. 59 crore.

Now, Disney’s on Sony
Come September and you’ll find your favourite Disney cartoons on Sony. Sony Entertainment Television has entered into a three year contract with Buena Vista Television India (BVTI) to launch Disney on Sony. Earlier BVTI had an alliance with Zee which lasted for three and a half years.


Cable Act Amendment Bill to be introduced in Parliament soon
With the aim of bringing private satellite channels under the ambit of the Cable Television Networks rules, the Union Cabinet has approved the proposal for further amending the original act of 1995. An amendment bill will be introduced in Parliament soon.

 

Amitabh Bachchan to promote DD’s social service messages
Contrary to encouraging participants to go for at least one crore in the extremely popular Kaun Banega Crorepati on Star Plus, Amitabh Bachchan will ask the viewers of Doordarshan to lead normal and sober lives, one within reasonable limits. Amitabh Bachchan will be doing the community services messages till such time as Doordarshan realises its dues worth Rs. 3 crore from him.


AXN to change tack on positioning
AXN Action TV is positioning itself as a lifestyle adventure channel for the 20-somethings, despite drawing in audiences in the 18-44 age group. "We are building up the brand of the channel. We have an established product and feel the need now to invest in branding," said AXN Action TV managing director Todd Miller.


India Infoline mulls business news channel
Finance portal India Infoline.com is likely to launch a business television channel as part of its move to make an entry into the convergence market. After establishing a brand name in the Internet content, the company is setting up the infrastructure to provide business andfinancial news content in audio-video form.
