A TRIBUTE TO A LEGEND
IN conjunction with Mohammad Rafi’s 19th death anniversary I will be placing a tribute to Rafi in the New Straits Times on July 31, as I’ve faithfully done every year.
Mohammad Rafi entertained us all his life. And it is only fair that I show how much I miss him on his death anniversary. It’s but a small token of the immense love I have for him.

STILL A HUGE DRAW
A regular reader of SCREEN, I would like to congratulate my favourite star, Shah Rukh Khan, on his superhit, Josh. Josh opened to 100 per cent collections all over India proving there still is a captive audience for his movies. In Josh he has acted stylishly in a tapori kind of role, which is the best in his career to date. I look forward to his forthcoming films One Two Ka Four, Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, Yash Copra’s Mohabbatein and his own movie, Ashoka The Great.

KING AMONG LYRICISTS
MY hearty congratulations to the legend among lyricists, Anand Bakshi on his 71st birthday (July 21). Bakshi, through his work, has enriched Hindi lyrics for the last 45 years. He holds the world record of 6000 songs. He is the most prolific and successful lyricist ever. He seems to be getting younger at heart if his lyrics are any indication. Last year he swept all the awards in the country including the prestigious SCREEN award. I wish him good health and success in the coming years, too.

HIS BEST TO DATE
I am very much impressed by the performance of Bobby Deol in Bichhoo. I feel this his best performance so far in the movies. The film is well-made for which director Guddu Dhanoa deserves praise.
Contrary to the views of most reviewers, I feel the title is appropriate. Like the scorpion, the hero in the story does not fall into the hands of his enemies. After all, if you try to cover a scorpion with a utensil, you would find that the utensil becomes warm with its repeated stings, or so legend has it. Later, if you take off the utensil, you’d find it dead.

ANOTHER YEAR OLDER
THROUGH SCREEN I wish my favourite actor Sanjay Dutt a very happy birthday (July 29) and long life. Although he was branded as a muscle-flexing hero a couple of years ago, he asserted his versatility with a wide range of performances in films like Saajan, Khal-Nayak, Khoobsurat, Daag-The Fire, Haseena Maan Jaayegi and Chal Mere Bhai. He is one among the few crowd-pullers left in the Hindi film industry, who can guarantee box-office success.

CHALK AND CHEESE
HATS off to Anu Malik for his mind-blowing music in Josh and Refugee to know how versatile Anu is as a composer one only has to compare the music of Josh with that of Refugee the two are very different. I look forward to his forthcoming releases Yaadein, Aks, Fizaa, Dil Dhoondta Hai and Aghaaz.

MARILYN REMEMBERED
I still remember the late Marilyn Monroe who committed suicide on August 5, 1962 she was known for her sex goddess image which frustrated her real talent for comedy revealed in Gentlemen, Prefer Blondes (1953) and The Seven-Year Itch (1955).

HATS OFF TO THE KHERS
Your report National Awards for Vanaprastham Mohan Lal and Kiron Kher (SCREEN, July 16) was indeed motivating.
Three cheers to Kiron Kher for her super success as an actress. The Kher Jodi (Kiron and Anupam) are indeed made for each other. The Khers excel in all departments. The multifaceted Khers are also encyclopedias of Bollywood. To make things more attractive, Raju Kher has also excelled in Jungle as Urm-ila’s father. Even though his dialogue delivery does not match his big brother’s. Raju, too has a bright future.
