Kerala
filmdom objects to mega publicity
By Our Correspondent
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala film industry has objected
to the indiscriminate screening of pre-release clippings on
the various Malayalam channels. They also want film artistes,
earning more than Rs 50,000 in films, to stop working in TV
serials.
Producers, distributors and exhibitors, under the banner of
Joint Council of Malayalam Film Industry, have imposed a ban
on five films, which received extensive exposure in various
channels. It has also threatened a similar ban on artistes
who earn well in films, but continue to act in teleserials.
However, the council has invited the ire of artistes and filmmakers,
who will be the losers in the bargain. Six films have come
under the ban since the council was formed. However, the ban
on three films was lifted after the producers explained that
the channel had shown clippings without their permission.
Another ban was lifted, later, after a producer agreed to
pay the prescribed fine.
Now, while the Malayalam Cine Technicians Association (MACTA),
comprising directors and technicians, has decided to defy
the ban, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA)
is game for an amicable settlement of the issue.
The executive committee of MACTA has decided to leave it to
film directors to decide whether they would like to show their
film clippings and have said the ban would have no effect
on MACTA members.
