Aamir: In Indu's
films the actors are subservient to the situations... The best thing about Ishq is, it has shaped the way all of us had visualised it. We had seen it as an out-and-out entertainer, and I think that's what the film is. I hope people think so too. I don't know why, most people in the industry don't associate Indu (Indra Kumar) with comedy. They think it's not his forte. But I feel comedy is a major plus point of all his films. In Dil, the melodrama happens only towards the end in the last few reels. The rest of the film had a comic streak running through it. In fact 75 per cent of the film had a lot of fun in it. In Raja too the highlights were the comic scenes. Even Beta, though melodramatic, had a lot of comedy in it. Ishq too is heavily comedy-based. The only difference between Ishq and the other film he did with me -- Dil -- is that here I didn't have a well-defined character to play. For example, in my film like Raja Hindustani, Rangeela and Akele Hum Akele Tum, I had well-defined characters. There was a definite graph. And I had a clear-cut track to follow. But Indu doesn't believe in strong characterisation. Beta, I think is the only film where the hero's character was clearly etched. Otherwise Indu believes more in situations. He highlights sequences. He believes in surprise twists and turns. In Ishq too both his heroes are subservient to the situations. We sing, dance, romance, fight but to meet the needs of the situations. Our characters have various shades to them. In one scene I even play Sadashiv Amrapurkar!
