Nagesh Bhosale’s second attempt at direction after the success of Gallit Gondhal Dillit Mujara, is a commendable effort.
Nandu is a farmer in a village in Karajgaon. He has a family comprising a wife, a young son whose school fees he cannot afford, an unmarried sister for whose marriage he has no money and an ailing mother whose medical expenses he cannot bear. He has to mortgage his pet cows to buy fertilisers for his field. Above all this, there is no rain and his crop goes waste. His only solace and support is his childhood friend Rajaram Pawar. After obtaining a degree in agriculture, Rajaram returns to his village dejected as he does not get a decent job in the city and decides to take up farming like his late father.

Rajaram and Nandu both apply for bank loans. While Rajaram’s loan gets sanctioned, Nandu’s application is rejected as he already has a loan to be repaid. Depressed, Nandu consumes pesticide and dies in Rajaram’s arms. Many young farmers follow suit. Rajaram now decides to take matters in his hands. He visits Mantralaya and meets Agriculture Minister Vishnupant Bhosale and earns his confidence when he tells him that he has discovered oil in his field. The wily minister willingly accompanies him to his village. He travels like a common man in a state transport bus, walks miles to reach the village and sleeps on a cot with proper sheets without a fan as there is no electricity supply in the village. There is no water supply to the fields. The corrupt shopkeepers do not sell fertilisers to the farmers. Rajaram then takes the minister to Nandu’s house and he is shocked to see Nandu’s sister branded as a prostitute and the entire family is living in fear and misery. The Minister now realises the hardships that the farmers are facing and decides to take up the cudgels for them. Meanwhile, Rajaram is arrested on charges of kidnapping the minister.

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
Nagesh Bhosale has handled a sensitive topic very deftly and manages to touch a chord with heartfelt performance as the distraught Nandu. His facial expression gives away his sorry plight. The role of Rajaram is played by Makrand Anaspure and he does justice to his character that is disturbed by the troubles of his fellow farmers and wants to bail them out of it. Sayaji Shinde as Vishnupant Bhosale, the agriculture minister, has a small but very impressive role. This is veteran actor Nilu Phule’s last film before he passed away recently. Despite his age and ill health, the veteran actor has done a brilliant job of a distressed father, whose farmer-son commits suicide thinking that the father would be compensated by the government for his death. Credit must also be given to the writers, Sham Petkar and Arvind Jagtap who have weaved a sensitive tale that highlights the plight of the farmers in far off villages and leaves an impact. It also showcases the small details that the farmer has to face and that are little known to anyone. The camerawork by Suresh Suvarna is outstanding. Every frame looks fresh and appealing. He has used a colours for different scenes thus making it very impressive. The effort of the five producers Sayaji Shinde, Makrand Anaspure, Nagesh Bhosle, Laxmikant Khabiya and Suresh Suvarna is also laudable for bringing up issues that are not known and highlighting them through a tale.
Verdict
One star for the impressive story and one for Nagesh Bhosale’s brilliant acting and direction.
